Describe the biggest difference in your daily life.
The biggest difference in my daily life is that I now own a permanent iron roofed house which is well plastered. My previous house was in very poor condition. It was just a small hut which was grass thatched. My family is big and it could not accommodate us all. Apart from being small, it was leaking whenever it could rain. This was really stressing us. But I am thankful now since my new house can withstand all weather conditions. My children will also be able to study without any difficulties. Unlike before when they used to go to my neighbor's place to study every night. I am now happy and living peacefully with my family.
Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
I saw the message notification on my mobile phone at exactly 3 am. On checking to confirm who had sent the message, I realized that it was from GiveDirectly informing me that my first transfer had been sent. I was very happy and thankful. My family also rejoiced upon hearing the good news.
What did you spend your first transfer on?
I spent part of my first transfer on purchasing some building materials like twenty-five pieces of iron sheets, timber, and some building poles. I decided to build a new permanent house because my previous house was very small and in poor condition. My family is big and the hut could not accommodate us all. I later spent the remaining amount of money on purchasing enough foodstuffs for my family that would take us to the next harvesting season.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
Comfortable life is something that has been my long time desire but this has never come through due to financial instability. Being a widow with all responsibilities to provide for the family, I face more challenges ever since my hands can not support doing heavy jobs. I am forced to depend on my daughter who is doing house work at Mombasa and her earnings are never enough to support our family needs. Receiving this money means providing capital for my daughter to start a second hand clothes business in order to have a reliable source of income. I also plan to construct a good house for myself because the one I have is just braving the dangers of strong winds in our area.
What is the happiest part of your day?
I spend most of my day time at home because of my health condition. When I wake up in the morning, I clean my compound and prepare breakfast for my family. In the afternoon, I mostly relax and it is at this time I get my grandchildren's campany. Therefore, afternoon is the happiest part of my day
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
Considering my health condition, my hands cannot support me doing heavy jobs like charcoal burning which is the only major source of income in our area. This has forced me to majorly depend on the little income from my daughter who is doing house work at Mombasa. Since her support is rarely consistent, sometimes we miss meals something that robes our family's joy. Therefore lack of reliable source of income is my biggest hardship.
