How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
My life is different in that I now have two dairy cows that I think I would not have had anytime soon. This has brought a lot of changes in my life. I now have enough milk supply for the household as I sell the surplus produced to meet other basic household needs. This has led to reduced levels of stress on my side and better living standards in the long run. This has been the greatest difference in my daily life.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
GiveDirectly did so well in giving unconditional cash to every deserving household without discriminating on anyone within the village. This gave us freedom to choose how we were going to spend the money without feeling obliged to do a particular task. On the other hand, I did not see anything that I thought GiveDirectly should improve on.
What did you spend your second transfer on?
I used part of my second transfer to buy a cow, part of it to complete my newly built house and saved the remaining amount to be used to buy food for the family. The money came at a time that I did not have a cow of my own and I had been thinking of owning one but due to financial difficulties and old age, I could not be able to raise enough money to buy one. I therefore ended up using a lot of money to buy milk which strained the little resources that I had for the family. GiveDirectly's transfer was an opportune moment that I thought I should have taken advantage of.

Describe the biggest difference in your daily life.
I depend on small scale farming to earn an income to meet my family needs. Because of my old age, I am not in a position to do casual jobs in the village thus I had to rely on my children sometimes for basic needs. I had a dream to buy a cow since I knew having one could help me reduce my daily expenditures and even earn an extra income through milk sales. This was a dream that couldn't be realized since my income from farming was never enough to cater for daily needs and investments. My children had to buy milk every day for breakfast and this was costly. The biggest difference in my daily life is that I have bought a dairy cow after receiving money from GiveDirectly. Currently, I no longer depend on my children because I get milk from my cow for household consumption, sell the surplus at the market to earn an income to meet other basic needs. I am so happy because I know in the next few years I will be in a position to buy another dairy cow through the saving plan that I have started from the sales from milk.
Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
I remember it was very early in the morning when my son checked my phone and informed me that GiveDirectly had sent me 55000KES. I felt so happy because I had never received such an amount of money before. I knew my dream of owning a cow had finally be realized. I was so thankful for the support.
What did you spend your first transfer on?
I depend on substennce farming to provide for my family and waiting for months to elapse in-between season of harvesting, is a challenge for me. I had never gotten enough harvest to fully sustain my family thus it could reach a time when we have to spend a lot a day for our basic needs. I had a goal to buy a cow since milk on each day was a basic commodity we needed and it was costly for us buying this daily. When I received my tranfer I took a portion of it to buy a dairy cow. I am happy that I no longer spent on milk again since I produce at my homestead. I used the other portion of my family's basic needs mainly food and clothes to add to what we had.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
Old age demands so much care and comfort so as to live a healthy lifestyle. Receiving this money means more comfort in my house. I will spend the transfer to install a ceiling roof in my house and buy warmer bedding to cushion me from the cold nights.
What is the happiest part of your day?
The happiest part of my day is in the morning. I thank God for the health that comes with every new day. when I wake up healthy in the morning, this means a good opportunity to plan well for my day's activities.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
My community boasted of bountiful maize harvests when I was growing up until my 50s. About two decades ago this has since changed. We have been reduced to poverty due to diminishing of a commodity that had kept everyone above water. This shortcoming was caused by a soil borne disease that has been adamantly ruining our crops over time leaving us with scanty harvests which cannot sustain unlimited needs. This is the biggest hardship I've faced in my life.
