How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
My husband was diagnosed with cancer, this has been very expensive for us, thus at the moment I don't have any other goal but to concentrate on my husband's health by supporting him through this terminal illness.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
The organization has empowered both the young and the old without any form of discrimination, we feel loved and empowered as a community, thus we are forever grateful for the wonderful gesture that impacted our lives positively, So far I have not witnessed any form of inefficiency.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
Since my husband was diagnosed with cancer, life has never been the same for us, it has been a struggle day in day out, dialysis is very expensive yet it's done weekly, thus upon receiving my second transfer, used KES 45,000 on my husband's treatment. I then used the remaining amount on school fees and foodstuffs for our seven children. I am so thankful and relieved for the great support that came our way, I was unable to meet all the needs because I depend only on farming which was no longer productive due to climatic change.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
It was a few minutes past 8 am when people in my neighborhood started shouting that GiveDirectly had sent the promised money. I immediately called my daughter and requested her to help me check if I had also received mine since my helper was not around. I became so happy when she confirmed to me that the money was already in my account and I started singing happily since I knew that my spouse would finally continue with his medication.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
My spouse is suffering from cancer and is always visiting the hospital three times a month. Before receiving the transfer, we had a huge medical bill since he had been admitted and was feeding through tubes. This bill was accumulating daily and I was worried where I would get money to use in settling it. I am glad because with the transfer, I was able to clear the bill after getting help from some of the family members and my husband is now recuperating well at home.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spent a good amount from my first transfer to pay the hospital bill worth KES 42000 since my spouse was sick and had been admitted. He is suffering from a terminal disease and he has to go for a checkup three times a month. This has been costly to us since apart from the frequent hospital visits, he is on a strict diet which also requires a lot of money. Using the remaining amount, I used KES 5000 to pay school fees for my daughter to avoid her being sent back home and KES 7000 on food to last us for some time.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
My husband was diagnosed with throat cancer in December 2020 and since then he has been in and out of hospital for chemotherapy treatment. This has drained us financially to the extent of selling two pieces of land to cater for his medication. As we speak now, he was taken ill and is admitted in hospital. Receiving this money means we will have relieve from selling the last piece of land that is remaining. As at the moment he has a pending bill of KES 120,000 which I will use all the transfer to pay it. This will help us lift a very heavy burden financially.
What is the happiest part of your day?
The happiest part of my day is in the morning when I wake up. I hardly sleep at night because I have worries on how my husband who has been hospitalized for two months now is doing. I spend the entire night thinking about where I will get money for his treatment and also praying to God to heal him. Waking up to find out he is well makes me happy and thankful to God.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
The biggest hardship I have faced in my life is seeing my husband fighting cancer. When he was diagnosed with it in December 2020 we were in turmoil on what to do and all hope was lost as he is the breadwinner of the family. From then he has not been working and it means I have to work harder to cater for everything including his hospital bills. This has been difficult on me psychologically and financially. I have sold almost everything we have including land and cows so as to pay for medication which is very expensive.
