How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
I plan to take up a loan at my workplace so that I can expand my business. I am optimistic that with a well-established salon I would make at least a tangible profit.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
GiveDirectly gave us financial freedom, making me establish my business within a short period. People’s lives have been lifted positively. Both the young and the old were empowered equally regardless of our socio-economic difference form of discrimination, thus we are grateful. In my opinion, the staff did amazing work thus I did not encounter any loopholes.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I work as a security guard in the county and am a mother of one. When GiveDirectly promised me the unconditional transfer, I saw it as an opportunity to set up my salon business. This has been my dream, but it was hard to realise it because of my financial capabilities. Therefore, upon receiving my second share of the money, I used the entire KES 55,000 on establishing the business. I knew that this would be a tremendous boost to my income, which was barely enough to cater to all my needs. Thus, I am grateful for the support that lifted my business amazingly.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
The moment I received my transfer, we were at the farm engaged with the farm work. Then suddenly, I heard my phone ringing and vibrating. Upon checking what the message was all about, I realised that I had received money from GiveDirectly. I was overwhelmed with joy and happiness because I was positive that my life would transform into a better one. I then told my Aunt who was equally happy for me. I then embarked on planning how I would utilise the transfer.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
Starting a new business in my life would mean financial freedom. GiveDirectly gave me financial support that enabled me to start a business. With this, I am optimistic about a better tomorrow. In addition to that, I was able to cut down on the cost of buying milk daily. I am so grateful for the support that brought so much joy and happiness into my life.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
The moment I received my transfer, I thought of buying a dairy cow to cut down on the cost of buying milk daily. I work with the county council, though my income was not enough for me to be able to purchase a cow. Therefore, I used KES 35,000 in purchasing a dairy cow. I then used the remaining amount of KES 20,000 in buying salon products and items to start a salon business. I am so grateful for the milestones that I have achieved in a short time.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
I have been living in an incomplete structure for the last three years. My priority is to bring it to completion in terms of ceiling fixing and window panes. I have always been consuming milk given in-kind from my uncle's household and this norm pains me. If I become lucky to receive this transfer, I will consider buying a dairy cow.
What is the happiest part of your day?
Despite my house being stalled for three years, atleast I am happy that I managed to do a concrete of it's floor. I can easily mob and dust it.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
I was diagnosed with tuberculosis in the month of August 2020 and the same condition has been persistent. In my daily activities as an enforcement officer in Chebunyo town, I usually complain of chest pains and difficulty in breathing. This causes absenteeism in place of work and generally affecting my performance. I risk being terminated and uncertain of my future.
