How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
For many years, I was always planning to build an iron roofed house since I was living in a grass thatched hut. However,I lacked the financial resources to buy the necessary building materials until GiveDirectly came to enrol me into their program, that's when I accomplished this. I built the house which I am currently living in with my family. I also have cows as assets to me, which can help me in case of a dire financial need.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
The whole process of enrolling and identifying needy households was done well and efficiently by GiveDirectly and no complaints arose concerning this financial support which in my opinion its what GiveDirectly has done well. I don't see anything that GiveDirectly does not do well.
What did you spend your second transfer on?
I spent a larger portion of my second transfer on buying a heifer and an ox. Having these livestock to me is a saving and a financial security. I can readily lean on them in case of a financial problem. In addition to this, I also spent part of the money on paying my children's school fees for them to be allowed to continue with their studies. I also took a portion of the money to buy foodstuffs and meeting other basic needs.

Describe the biggest difference in your daily life.
I was living in a house that was in a bad state and not spacious enough. It had reached a point of collapsing and I was always worried it might fall on me any time since I lacked money to renovate it. It's through GiveDirectly's financial support that enabled me to buy the building materials and to construct a new house, stable and spacious for my family. This the biggest difference that I've so far experienced in my daily life.
Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
I was overwhelmed with joy and happiness the moment I saw the notification from GiveDirectly. At least I could afford to smile again after going through tough and hard times in my life, and it gave me peace of mind for now that I would build a new stable house to shelter on.
What did you spend your first transfer on?
I spent my first transfer on purchasing iron sheets and other building materials to construct a new house since my old house was in a bad state and renovating it would not be enough, because it was to the point of collapsing and it was also not spacious. I now have a new two-room house and spacious enough to accommodate us. I also replaced my bed and mattress since they were old and worn out. On the remaining amount, I purchased two goats to keep and I am certain of reaping good returns from them once they reproduce. Food was also a problem for me and I had to do some shopping for my family. This transfer has helped me to buy enough food for my family for the money I had was not sufficient enough to fully provide for them.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
Receiving this money means that I will have a good chance to start a shop. This will provide me income to meet my daily needs. I will also use the remaining balance to purchase five goats, repair my house and pay school fees for my grandchild.
What is the happiest part of your day?
The happiest part of my day is in the afternoon when the sun is shining. Being aged, I feel much pains in my body especially in the morning. When I get the sun's heat, I feel good and relieved from the pains. The relieve from the pains makes me feel very happy.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
The biggest hardship I have faced in my life is loss of my husband whom I had relied on to provide my basic needs. Today, I just depends on my son who is doing casual jobs at Mombasa. Sometimes I lack money that can meet my needs.
