Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
I learned that I had received my transfer around 6 in the morning when I was still on my bed. I felt so happy since I had never received such huge amounts of money before in my entire life.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
The biggest difference in my daily life is that I now have a spacious iron-roofed house that I have managed to put up after receiving this transfer. I have always been dreaming o constructing one for so many years but I could not afford it. I am now very proud since the previous one was a very small grass-thatched house that made my family so uncomfortable and some the children could seek shelter from their friends. I am so happy now because finally, I am living with all my family members courtesy of GiveDirectly.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spent a larger portion of my transfer on buying iron sheets, timber, building poles, and nails for the construction of a new house. Previously, I was living in a grass-thatched house and because of my poverty life, I couldn't build a bigger and better house. I then paid the laborer KES 5000 as his labor charge. The remaining amount of money, I bought enough foodstuffs for my family.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
Besides being old my health has also been deteriorating. I have been suffering from tuberculosis disease for the past 3 years but due to financial challenges, I have failed to seek proper medication from referral hospitals. Receiving this money signifies good health. I am planning to spend $900 to seek medication. Other than treatment, I will use the remaining amount to renovate my temporary house which is leaking when we experience downpour in our area.
What is the happiest part of your day?
The happiest part of my day is in the morning. It is at this time when I thank God for giving me a new day to live, despite my health condition.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
Poor health has become my biggest hardship in my life. This condition has made my life tough because am not able to do my casual jobs I used to do before, which could enable me earn some cash and sustain my needs. I depend on my grandchildren who is a herder.
