How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
I have new goals of building my teenage boys another house where they can sleep and one that is much more modern. I also plan to buy another cow to add to the ones that I have. I don't have money to do the above but I plan to borrow a loan from money-lending SACCOs such as Imarisha SACCO. I want to build the boys another house where they can sleep because the one that they sleep in has become old and is mud-walled. Getting mud for smearing on the walls is a challenge and hence we have to buy it. However, with the modern house that we plan to build for the boys, we will no longer have to incur the cost of buying mud. The cows that I have, have low milk production and hence the milk is only enough for our consumption. I want to buy another cow with higher milk production. I plan to sell the milk and use the money that I will get from the sales on doing other developments.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
GiveDirectly did well because they enabled me to achieve my dream of having another house. We will thus no longer incur the cost of buying mud for smearing the walls of the houses. The lives of the people in the community were also uplifted because they were able to do many developments such as constructing new houses. Although most people received help, some of them were left out, they were given phones but they never received the transfers.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
We spent all of the money that we got on the second transfer on building another house that is much more modern. We had bought building materials such as building blocks and sand with the first transfer but the money was not enough to start the construction process. We decided to settle on building another house with the transfers because the houses that we used to live in had become old, were grass-thatched and mud-walled. Getting good mud for smearing the walls and floor has become a challenge and hence we had to buy it. With the new house, we will no longer incur such costs. We were not able to construct another house before because we didn't have the money. My husband is a teacher while as for me I am a small-scale mixed farmer. Most of the money that we get usually goes to the payment of school fees for our children. Two of them are in secondary school while two of them are in a private primary school. I am therefore so much grateful to GiveDirectly for enabling us to achieve our dream.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
The moment I received the transfer I felt so happy. I remember vividly like yesterday that it was around 9 am. When I heard a ringtone message from my phone. I didn't expected any message from anyone. When I realized that it was message confirming that I have received money from GiveDirectly I felt so happy. I immediately inform my family members and they were so overwhelmed with joy. I knew I would be able to buy building materials ready to build a better house. I when and withdrew the money the same day.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
The biggest difference in my daily life is that I have bought building materials. I bought bricks and sand. I am planning to start build a better house for my family. We live in a small mud house which cannot host us comfortably. Maintaining a mud floor is not easy since it involves smearing the house every weekend to be dust free. We were exposed to dust particles which might caused respiratory related diseases. We had decided with my spouse to purchase building materials and build a better brick house. Currently we have brought all the needed material waiting for the second transfer to start the construction process. We are also doing our best to save the small money that we get from our daily work. We will live in a decent and dust free house when it's complete. GiveDirectly has given us hope to work hard to achieve our dream house. We are so grateful for the support because we know that soon it gonna be great and celebration.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spent KES 30,000 to purchase bricks and sand planning to build a better house for my family. Live in a small mud house which cannot host all the family comfortably. I bought shopping for my children in various schools. The rest of the money I bought food and clothes for my children. I am so happy because GiveDirectly supported us to achieve our dreams.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
My house is made of mud. It has been a challenge getting good soil for repairing since mud house is susceptible to moisture especially when it rains. I need two gallons of that soil for maintenance which is sold at 10 dollars per gallon which I find expensive to maintain. So getting this money will help me build a brick house. I expect to cost around 6500 Dollars but this money will help me buy the materials needed.
What is the happiest part of your day?
The happiest part of my day is in the evening. This is the time i get to enjoy dinner with my children when they return from school. It feels good to share our day experience with them.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
The biggest hardship has been lack of enough food. Weather in our area has changed and thus our stable food which was maize no longer do well. We used to depend on it for sale and for family use. The little money we get cannot sustain our needs especially when we now include buying soil to repair my house.
