How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
Since the piece of land we're living in is small, I am planning to continue buying it in bits whenever I get money. This is because I also want to support my children in their education by paying their school fees on time. With this, apart from them getting a quality education, they will have something to inherit from me the way I also inherited mine from my parents even though it is a small portion.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
GiveDirectly deciding to go to a place with high poverty index level where people feed from hand to mouth is a noble duty. With the transfer, we were able to achieve so many things in life. First, people were able to build houses, those who had no livestock bought one while others added thus increasing the number of live assets they owned.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I have five children and they are all still at the primary level in their education. I do a business of buying goats and selling them at a higher price for survival. I have one dairy cow and purchasing another was my goal so that we will be having milk throughout the year. I am happy that I was able to acquire one using KES 25000 from my transfer and used the remaining KES 27000 to purchase a piece of land. I settled on this since our family land is small and we can't practice crop and dairy farming on it. I have started planting some onions on this farm so that I can later sell and use the money to pay school fees for my children.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
I had gone to the market to run for an errand, it was around 9 am when I heard my phone vibrating in my pocket, on reaching out I saw a Mpesa message notification on the screen, I was curious to open because I was not expecting money from anyone that morning, I was startled by what I saw, I could not believe my eyes, I was so happy that I immediately went house without disclosing to anyone in the market, on arrival I informed my wife who was equally excited and grateful for the support.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
Words cannot express how happy I was when I finally bought a water tank, we are now assured that the rainwater we will be collecting will not go to waste anymore because I now have a storage tank, I am relieved that this will minimize the number of trips we make to the stream daily, I also started a goat rearing business which I am hopeful that I will be able to earn an extra income from it, on top of that I now have a sofa set where my guest can comfortably sit, GiveDirectly brought hope in our lives and we are grateful for the support that has impacted our lives.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
Imagine fetching water from the river daily not once but several trips to the stream in a day, it is very hectic and Sometimes the water is dirty, the experience made me prioritize harvesting rainwater, unfortunately, I did not have a water tank where I could store the water. when my transfer came it was a big relief for me because I used KES 21,000 in buying a water tank, I then used KES 12,000 in starting a goat rearing project, later I bought furniture for my house. I am grateful for the support that made me accomplish the desires of my heart.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
Receiving this money means a better storage facility for my farm produce . Currently I do not have a farm storage hence most of my farm produce go bad. Due to financial restraints, I have not been able to consruct one. I plan to use 10000 shillings to consruct the granary, and being that water is a big problem here consuming almost 2 hours of our time everyday, I will use 10000 to buy a 10000 litre water tank.
What is the happiest part of your day?
My happiest part of the day is in the evening when I am back home from work and have ample time to rest. My day is usually packed up with activities, either, selling goats at a nearby market or doing casual jobs.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
My biggest hardship is lack of finances. I earn approximately 300 shillingsfrom my small business. This amount is only sufficient for food and school fees. Therefore, I literally have nothing to save or meet other family needs.
