How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
At the moment I don't have any new goal but am thankful for the clear transformation in my household. I did and accomplished a lot within a short span that included but was not limited to the clearance of all the debts I had, both in school and in the immediate neighborhood that spared my livestock from being auctioned. I am no longer seeking assistance from anyone but pushing on to ensure that I become independent to provide for all my household's needs.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
GiveDirectly was the first organization since I was born to give people direct cash transfers and allowed every recipient to spend in anything they would love to. No one was pushed to make some decisions but after receiving the transfers we were just followed up for us to share the decisions we settled on. Everything turned out so well, and no one complains at all but hoping that GiveDirectly will still come back to the village someday.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
My life as a single mother of four and also taking care of my niece has been very challenging even though I had been working extra hard to ensure that I fully provide for them. I have been struggling to make ends meet, and I am glad that GiveDirectly came in and enhanced the implementation. Upon receiving the second transfer, I spent KES 25000 on timber, KES 16000 on iron sheets, and also KES 3000 on buying nails that I am currently using in the construction of a small shop on my piece of land adjacent to the road, and some meters away from the school. This is a project I had been hoping to start and am happy to finally see it coming up. I intend to stock with all the basic school requirements and the immediate community needs since we don't have many shops around. I also paid the advanced labor charges of KES 4000 and saved the remaining amount to help in managing the progress of the construction.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
It was early in the morning and I was going about my usual duty of milking the cow when I heard my phone vibrating in my pocket alerting me of an incoming SMS. I didn't pay so much attention and I continued milking. I later then decided to check it and I was so happy upon realizing that I had been sent the lump sum transfer of KES 55000 that GiveDirectly had promised. I celebrated giving thanks for the wonderful surprise. I then hurriedly prepared myself and I went to withdraw the money.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
The biggest difference that this transfer has brought is that my boy now has a house of his own where he can sleep and study without any disturbances. He is so happy about this. Other than this, the transfer enabled me to pay school fees for my children and they are thus no longer sent home due to school fees arrears. They are also able to feed well because I was able to buy some food with part of the money that I received. Thank you so much GiveDirectly for what you have done for my family.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spent most of the transfer in buying iron sheets. I bought twenty iron sheets because I wanted to use them in building a house for my school-going teenage boy. I decided to do so because he didn't have a place to spend the night and he usually had to go to his friends' houses. With this, he had experienced a lot of challenges because he sometimes missed to find them. This thus was affecting him academically and socially because he didn't have a nice place of his own to study and sleep. I had always wanted to build a house for him but due to lack of money, I was not able to, most of the money that I get, usually goes to payment of school fees. I therefore thank GiveDirectly because they enabled me achieve what deemed to be impossible to me.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
Receiving this money means my dream of owning a dairy cow will come true. I am a single mother of three and also have two other nephews to take care of.Feeding , educating and clothing these kids is a challenge because the little I earn from the sale of fast food in the market is spent on food .My incomes from this job is KES 200 per day and the whole of it is spent on milk and flour . With this money I shall buy a cow worth KES 40000 to help me in food security and income generation from the sale of surplus milk.
What is the happiest part of your day?
The evening is the happiest part of my day after I have earn some amount to enable me feed my family.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
The biggest hardship I face is lack of finances. Due to family feuds and conflicts in my family ,I was unable to complete my studies and hence dropped out of school at standard 4.Therefore finding a job has been a challenge due to lack of education and skills. It has resulted in me struggling a lot to earn a living.
