How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
Two of my children sat for their grade eight examinations this month and I am grateful that their results are impressive. I had planned with their entry to the next level of studies in mind and at the moment, I am working hard to raise other funds that will equip them as they commence their secondary school studies. The farming I had been investing a lot in may not be part of my plans this season since all the resources I would have used are diverting to the school fees and school requirements for my two children.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
The most encouraging thing that I appreciated and everyone in the village valued so much was the enlightening information we were given during enrollment. On knowing that we were receiving cash transfer that was unconditional and had to plan on our own, every household made clear plans and ensured that they completed them after receiving the transfers. Everything was well done, and no one is complaining since everyone chose how to spend without any influence from anybody.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I have a family of eight that after receiving the first transfer, we all decided to stick to the plans that we had on livestock buying and other household goods we had enlisted. With the hope we had over the receipt of the second transfer, my household had decided to spend a chunk of it on furnishing our house and the remaining on school fees for our children. I am happy that the results for my two children who sat for their final examinations in primary came out impressive, and I am expecting them to be admitted to the best schools they had selected. So far, I have been able to spend only KES 6000 out of the second transfer on fitting a ceiling board in my house and saved the remaining KES 45000 in anticipation of their secondary school entry. I am grateful that GiveDirectly came to support me at this time which would have been hard for my family. I am hoping that I will be able to keep saving for the following terms and also adequately provide for my family through the farming practices I had been doing.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
It was around 5 pm. When I heard a message notification from my phone. I was at the shopping center. When I checked the message I felt so happy, it was a message confirming that I have received money from GiveDirectly. I immediately inform my family members and everyone was happy. There was congestion at the shopping center anf I waited for five days then went to withdrew the money.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
The biggest difference in my daily life is that I have purchased a dairy cow. I used to buy milk and it was so costly. I depend on small scale farming and this earns me small profits. I was not able to save some money because of the recurring daily basis needs. When I received the transfer we decided to buy a dairy cow. Currently I no longer stress up on where to get the money for milk. GiveDirectly has fulfilled my wishes. I had always wished to own a dairy cow but I didn't had the money. My family members gets enough milk. Currently I no longer struggle but rather dell milk for other basic household items.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spent KES 29,000 to purchase a dairy cow. I used to buy milk daily and this was so costly for me. I do not have a continuous source of income. I bought some timber and yet to renovate my house to look decent. The rest of the money I bought food and clothes for my children.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
Receiving this money means my child will go to college. She is qualified to pursue a diploma in nursing but I cannot afford to pay the fees. She has been waiting for over three years now, too long for a young girl like her to wait. This is because I rely on subsistence farming, making only about KES 200 per day. Her dream will finally come true when I receive this money. I will spend about KES 50,000 on her school fees. I will then spend the remaining amount on school fees for the other girls in secondary school. I will finally improve my home with a ceiling to make it more descent.
What is the happiest part of your day?
News about GiveDirectly working in our area, which I heard about a month ago, brought me the greatest joy in my life. It had been a source of hope that I may soon be able to take my child to a medical college and to improve my home if it reached my village. Today is the greatest day of my life because I have been enrolled into the Cash transfer program. With my own eyes, I have seen and spoke at length to one official.my biggest wordy of raising children's school fees is gone.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
Lack of income is the biggest challenge in my life. As a father, my obligation, other than feeding my family, is to provide quality education for my children. This is difficult since I depend on u productive subsistence farming. The money I make from this kind of farming is only enough for providing food for the household. I struggle and sometimes fail in raising school fees for the children on time.
