How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
Having a farm to grow short-season crops is one big difference in my life. I leased a small piece of land in which I have potatoes, a second crop that is doing well. The first harvest was huge that I had to grow another one immediately. It coincided with a good season in the market and fetched me quite an amount of money. I bought a bull so that I continue making profits from this farming venture. I sell the crops and use that money to invest in livestock. I regard having this piece of land as a blessing since I make money from it. GiveDirectly has set me off on a good path of economic improvement through farming.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
In my opinion, GiveDirectly did so well by coming to us in order to help us. Enrollment was carried out at my home which means they got a real picture of who I am before sending me the money. this helped
What did you spend your second transfer on?
I spent the second transfer on buying a cow. I bought a heifer because I needed to prepare myself for milk production as a source of income. I also bought potato seeds and planting fertilizer. I then leased the piece of land that I then grew the crops on. It is a half-acre parcel of land. It is fertile. I got a huge harvest in the first crop and now the second crop is doing good as well.

Describe the biggest difference in your daily life.
The biggest difference in my life is that I have invested heavily in potato farming. I have spent KES 35000 in investing in potato farming. I have leased land for over 2 years and will be planting potatoes along that period. I expect to harvest potatoes from this farm for over 4 times. It is a very fertile land and I expect a great harvest for sale. The money I will get from it will go towards paying school fees for my children as soon as they join secondary school. It really gives me the joy to do such an investment that has been tested and verified to give lots of returns. More importantly is that my kid's future is secured as far as educational needs are concerned.
Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
The transfers started trickling in my neighbor's phones as from 10 am. At that time of the day, I heard people ululating in joy at the neighborhood as they had received the transfers. I was on the farm and did not even have my phone at hand. It was charging at a neighbor's house. I immediately went for my phone and on switching it on I got a message notifying me that I had received the transfers. The joy at that moment was immeasurable, I even shed tears of joy. I was full of energy and immediately prepared myself and went to the nearby agent to withdraw the transfers.
What did you spend your first transfer on?
I spent KES 15000 in buying a dairy cow and used KES 35000 to lease land for about two years. I then used the remaining KES 10,000 to buy my children clothes together with food and household goods.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
Receiving this money will make a total change in our lives. We plan to diversify our farming and livestock keeping. We have three dairy cows that are low yielding. This is a perfect opportunity to improve the breeds and increase milk production. We also have been actively involved in maize farming and we plan to improve our farming practices to improve production.
What is the happiest part of your day?
The happiest part is in the evening when I have had a good day in my hustles. It gives me much joy to be sure of putting food on the table for the family and I take the pride of being fully responsible.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
We have hustled a lot in our lives especially after marriage. We started from scratch where we had no house to live in as a family. For a long time we were homeless until I was employed as a driver which enabled me to save the little income that I got until we built this house. My hardships in the past have always motivated me to work even harder.
