Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
I was getting ready to sleep at around 11:00 Pm when a neighbor came knocking as he made inquiries whether we had seen the message from GiveDirectly. I had to check it up immediately and I was so excited that I wished it was a bit earlier so that I could withdraw. At first, I thought it might be reversed if it stays in my account till the next day but after a clear explanation from my neighbor, I decided to leave it till the next morning when I collected it at the nearby shopping center.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
The biggest difference in my daily life after receiving the first transfer is the sufficient provision of milk from the dairy cow that I bought. I am glad that I am no longer buying milk as I used to do thus able to save a lot of money that I can as well use in meeting other household bills.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I had been buying milk for my family of six in the past five years. This has always been expensive and much straining since I had to do anything possible to ensure that I have enough money not only for the milk but also other household goods. On receiving the first transfer, I spent KES 32000 on obtaining a dairy cow that has so far been providing us with enough milk for our household use. I also bought woods that I will be using soon in the construction of a new house. I had been living in a small flat-roofed house that could not accommodate the whole of my family and had to spend KES 18000 on the purchase of some construction materials as I await to initiate the project once I receive the second transfer. I also purchased clothing and enough foodstuff that we are still using to date with the remaining KES 5000. I am grateful to GiveDirectly for the great support that I received and looking forward to doing a lot more with the second transfer.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
Receiving this money will mean better housing for my family. I stay in a one-room house with my daughter and her two children. The house is small and cannot accommodate all of us hence the need to building a bigger one. I plan to buy a cow with KES 30000 that will enable me to sell milk, a liter will be good because it will supplement the income that I earn from my casual jobs.
What is the happiest part of your day?
I managed to build a house for my family with the help of my village members because I lost my piece of land. Having a shelter that houses my family has brought me happiness.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
Financial challenges are what hinder me to achieve so many plans. I rely on casual jobs to feed my family, my wife, daughter, and her two children but the money that I earn cannot enable us to buy food, and sometimes we sleep without food.
