How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
My life is different than it would have been if I never received the transfer in that I am living a better life. Through the aid, I was able to construct a spacious house for the family. Previously, I was living in a small, grass-thatched house that was not enough to fully accommodate all the family members and our properties. In addition, I am able to meet the needs of my family without struggling after starting a small grocery with my transfer where I sale vegetables likes kales.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
In my opinion, GiveDirectly did well for sending unconditional cash transfer direct to our phone. Through the transfer, our living standards has been uplifted in different ways. I was able to construct a better shelter for the family and taking my grandchild to hospital. Furthermore, my children are now learning without being sent home due to lack of fees. I do not see anything that it does not do well.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spent KES 6000 to purchase a door for my house which I had constructed with my first transfer for safekeeping of my property. I also used KES 5000 to seek medical care for my grandchild who had an accident one day after I received the transfer and had broken his legs. In addition, I used KES 10000 to purchase enough food for the family this is because we are experiencing famine in our area and most of the time we were sleeping without eating. Furthermore, used KES 3,000 to start a small grocery where I am selling kales, on average I earn a profit of KES 350 per day which is enough to meet the daily basic needs like food. I am planning to spend the remaining amount to educate my firstborn child who had completed secondary education and is about to join college next month.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
It was around 9 AM when I was from the dam and my neighbors when I heard my phone ringing so loudly. I was so curious and without wasting time I decided to ask one of the relatives to check what the notification was all about. On checking, he realized that it was an Mpesa message from GiveDirectly. I felt so happy and started rejoicing with my family members for receiving such a blessing in our lives.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
The biggest difference in my daily life is that the money empowered me to construct a new house that I had been longing to own for years but I could not afford. Before the coming of GiveDirectly, I used to stay under a very small which was in a very state. Some of its walls were almost collapsing and this made life to be more hectic. During the rainy seasons, I used to seek shelter from friends together with my family members. In addition to that, my children never have ample space for them to do their evening school assignments, which is really their academic performance. However, after constructing the house, it has brought joy in our lives because we no longer worry about the rains and my children now have a special room for their studies at night. This is like a motivation to them and I am certain that it will change their academic performance positively.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spent part of my first transfer on buying building poles, several pieces of iron sheets, timber, and nails. I opted to purchase all these with an aim of constructing a new house becasue the previous one was very small with a leaky roof. Later on, I used KES 13000 of the money to the masson for the job well done. To add that, I gave my daughter some little amount for her upkeep since she is still a student. With the remaing amount of money, I bought enough foodstuffs for the family.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
Receiving this money means building a better house for my family. This is because my current house is so small that it cannot accommodate us. Besides it is made of grass which is scarce due to the dry nature of this region. It is this this same house that serves as a kitchen and it tends to get smoky at night making it hard to breath. In addition to this, I will use part of the money to enroll my son in college.
What is the happiest part of your day?
The happiest part of my day is in the evening when I am interacting with my neighbours. This is because I spend the whole day in the farm chasing monkeys to prevent them from damaging my crops. This exercise is quite tiresome making me long for evenings when I get to rest.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
Since the death of my husband I was reduced to the sole breadwinner of the family. Life is not easy for us because I do not have a stable source of income. To provide for my family, I practise subsistence farming alongside other casual jobs such as burning charcoal and weeding in people's farms. The pay is not so sufficient and it is this same reason that made my first born son miss secondary education. In this regard I consider financial instability as my biggest hardship.
