How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
No, being a single parent. I am still focusing on my family by educating and providing basic needs for them.

Since I had used part of my first transfer to purchase a parcel of land and had not cleared the remaining balance, therefore,with the first transfer I spent KES 30000 amount from my second transfer to clear it up. Currently, I am still living in my father's compound however , my wish hope and prayers is to have my own home and soon I will be establishing my home now that I have a parcel of land. Besides, KES 20000 amount obtained from my second transfer went into purchasing a motorcycle. As single parent with four children to take care of, I have been using the motorcycle to ferry clients at fee and from this my family have been meeting their basic needs. Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
I am a shop keeper and while my neighbors and friends were doing shopping, I heard them talking about receiving the transfers and because I was busy, I had to check my messages later in the day when free. In the evening, I checked my messages and I confirmed that I had received the transfers. I was so happy because I knew that my plans will be fulfilled.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
I can now afford to provide three meals per day for my family and I was able to sustain my business which I was struggling to contain.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
Ever since I separated from my husband a couple of years ago, I came back home with my four kids and I have been staying with my father since my mom had passed on. My brothers were not happy with the decision that I made to come back home because they felt like a part their share of land would be allocated to me and my kids. This brought enemity between us and costed me peace of mind because they were again me in all aspects. My desire was to buy land and build a home for my kids but I couldn't manage to because the little profit that I was earning from my shop wasn't enough to take care of my children and save towards buying a land. I spend 30000 KES to buy a piece of land and I'm looking forward to spend my second transfer towards building a house. I also spend 10000 KES to add stock to my shop and 14000 KES to buy food. I'm grateful that I have enough food for my family and soon I'll be moving out to my place.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
They say marriage is a bed of roses but in my case it was thorns. My husband was very violent and abusive. If I had not left I could have lost some of my fingers, and my face destroyed. The scars on my hands always remind me of the hell I was living in. Returning to my parent's for safety was the worst option I made in my life. They said it is a shame, and can not make anything good out of myself but a bad omen. This is something I never thought could come out of my brothers. They always mistreat my children calling them names and always pushing them away. My heart pains every time I see this happen. They deserve to be loved and protected. That is why I intend to buy at least one acre of land, a place they can call home. my children can also feel the bright side of life.
What is the happiest part of your day?
Despite the challenges I am currently facing, I am happy that my father still recognises me
as her daughter. At the beginning of this year, he slaughtered a goat for me and my children for having to build him a house.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
Having separated from my husband ten years ago, I have been the breadwinner to my 3 children. I don't have a sustainable source of income, I depend on casual labour which can not sustain us in food and other basic needs. My three children in primary school have recorded higher absenteeism, let alone the huge balance to be paid. I would like to see my children through secondary education but where do I get the school fees from.
