How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
I am planning to fence around my homestead because both my houses are new therefore require a beautiful look.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
In my opinion, GiveDirectly officers taught us well on how to spend the transfers. For instance, my son bought a dairy cow. Furthermore, I was given the freedom to spend the money.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
Recently, fear had taken a grip on me. This is because my only semi-permanent house built many years ago had walls falling out. Due to this, I feared that the walls would soon fall on me. Therefore there was a need to build a better one but couldn't afford it. Luckily, GiveDirectly transfers came right on time. I, therefore, spent most of the second transfer on putting up a modern Iron roofed kitchen. As a result, I now have two new houses and can now sleep comfortably. To furnish my house, I bought a two-in-one sofa set seater at KES 1,500. This has made the empty house cozier because initially, I had locally made armchairs. For the remainder of KES 2,500, I bought a bag of maize. This will sustain me longer because as a grandma I leave alone.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
The moment I received the transfer I felt so happy. I remember it was around 9am. When I heard a message tone from my phone. I called my child to check it for me. I felt so happy when she said that it was a message confirming that I have received money from GiveDirectly. I have never received such amount of money before. I knew I would be able to buy building materials and build a better house for my family. I am so happy because GiveDirectly has changed our living standards.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
The biggest difference in my daily life is that I have build a better and spacious house. I used to live in a small house which could not host all my family members comfortably. The house was almost falling down. I depend on small scale farming. This there was no income since all the food was for consumption. I had no savings to buy the building materials. I was so stressed up and very worried. Whenever I had visitors there was no place to host them. Currently I have a decent and spacious house. I am no longer stress up on where to host my relatives and friends when they visit me. I have devoted much of my time on other activities. I am so happy because GiveDirectly has improved our living standards.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spent part of the money to buy building materials and build a better house. I used to live in a small house which could not host all my family comfortably. The house was almost falling down. I used some amount to plough my farm ready for planting. The rest of the money I bought food and clothes. I am so grateful because GiveDirectly has changed our living standards.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
Being a single mother has been a challenging experience to me, this happened when I lost my husband 15 years ago, I am now an old woman and only stays with my grand daughter who is still in school, life has not been friendly since I have to struggle by going the farm in order to put food on the table. I am excited that Givedirectly have come to our village and specifically to me, given a chance to get this transfer, I will enhance my business which I started long time ago of selling sour milk ( Mursik) and also build a small that will be descent for me. I plan to use KES 40,000 to buy two dairy cows KES 70,000 to build my house and use the remaining in buying a storage tank for water.
What is the happiest part of your day?
The better part of the day is in the morning when I go to grace my animals, I am a fun of milk and when I take my cows to look for pasture I then know that I will get rewards of milk in evening which I really enjoy doing it.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
I leave in a house that is too big for me to smear it, and my age cannot allow me to carry clay soil from far end, so I have decided to just stay without doing any repairs in the house, this attracts health risks like being raided with jiggers and alot of dust which will then cause chest complications to me, I will appreciate if I get this transfer to enable me build a good place to stay and live comfortably.
