What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I have a son who is currently sitting for his final secondary education examinations. The school administration asked all parents to ensure that we cleared all school balances before our children started their exams. I owed the school KSH 2000 in school fee balances. Upon receiving the transfer, I spent KSH 2000 from the transfer to clear the debt. My son has always wanted to join the army after completing his secondary education. By clearing the debt, I have created a suitable environment for him to excel and pursue his desired career path. After clearing the school fees, I spent the remaining amount of KSH 1000 in buying maize flour. The harsh economic conditions we are in have made it challenging for me to provide food for my family regularly. Receiving the money was good news for us, as we did not have any food left.

What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
My transfer came at a time when I has some school fee arrears. I therefore spent KES 1,000 to offset the fee balance. This lessen my burden since I did not have pressure of looking for fee when students were resuming learning this year. I spent the remaining KES 2,000 to buy clothes and gifts for my children during the Christmas festive season.

In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
There was a point where I thought that I couldn't attain my goals, but thanks to this program I knew my dreams would come true. I know that whether or not I get paid my family will not go hungry. I do not see anything wrong with how Give directly operates.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
With this money, I was able to prioritize school fees for my form four student. He has been constantly been sent home due to a lack of school fees. As he is in his last year of school he needs the stability to be able to study and pass his exams to be called to a good university and better his future. I paid KES.1000 so he could go back to class. The rest of the money, KES.2000 I used to for Solar Power lighting for my home. I realized that using kerosene each day is more expensive as it would cost me KES.100 a day tonight a lamp and also cook a meal. The solar power needs a deposit and a daily charge of KES.60 which is manageable for ten months and then it would be mine forever. This would ease my finances as well as give a proper environment for the children to read at home.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
I was standing talking to a friend who is also enrolled in the Give directly program when the text message came in. I was so deep in the conversation that it did not hit me that it was an M-pesa message. I reread it and could not believe it. I was so happy and I thank God for bringing Give directly into my life and I pray that they continue to touch and save people's lives.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
Life was hard but since you sent money I have faith and peace of mind and patience. With the little income, I earn together with these monthly transfers I know things will get better.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
With the cash transfer that I got, I was able to focus on paying school fees. I spent the KES1000 on my child who is in forum four this year. I did not want him to be sent home due to the school fees balance while he is about to do a major exam preparing for his future. The KES.200 I was able to spend on food. Me being a farmer it has not been an easy year but I know with the help of Give directly everything will be okay.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
Enhancing food security has been my heart's desire for quite some time now. With subsistence farming being the major source of livelihood, the one-acre piece of land cannot produce enough. I would like to plant a variety of crops to maximize my production and this requires a bigger area. I intend to save my transfers to purchase another acre of land for the aforementioned purpose.
What is the happiest part of your day?
My son suffered from pneumonia that got him admitted for one week. I became restless and couldn't concentrate on anything. His condition kept on getting worse and I was afraid that I would lose him. Seeing him get out of the hospital, fully recovered, gave me happiness.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
Financial challenges have become part of me since I do not have a stable source of income. Subsistence farming cannot be relied upon because of unpredictable rainfall patterns. It is therefore a problem to provide food and school fees for my children. My wife who works as a house help takes care of almost everything and it embarrasses me as a man.
