How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
I don't have any new goals. The goals that I had set before I received the transfer are what I worked on when I got the transfers. I built another house for my family and I bought maize for our consumption. I also took KES 10000 and I added it to the amount I had saved in the first transfer and bought a cow. I also tilled land and bought seeds for planting. All these are what I had planned to do when I got the transfers. I am therefore so much grateful to GiveDirectly for making this happen.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
GiveDirectly has uplifted the lives of many who were living in abject poverty. I am most grateful because I don't know where I could have been without their help. My family is large, we are eight members. My husband is old and sickly and hence I am the breadwinner of the family. The transfer from GiveDirectly has thus been a great blessing to me. The livelihoods of the people in my neighborhood have also changed, people have been to do many developments such as building new houses, buying livestock, and many more. I hence don't see anything wrong that GiveDirectly has done.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spent most of the money that I got from GiveDirectly on building another house for my family. We have been living in a small house for quite some time and the space was no longer enough for us all. Guests visiting the household lacked enough space to sleep in. I have always wanted to build another house for them but I was not in a position to due to lack of money. I am a small-scale farmer where I grow beans and vegetables. There are a lot of challenges in farming and sometimes the crops do not do well. When they don't, I sell little and the money that I get is only enough to cater for food. When they do well, I am able to get a better amount from the sales and I use it in paying school fees for my 6 children. There has thus not been money for saving to build another house.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
I was really excited that afternoon when I switched on my phone that had been charging since the morning after I left for my usual chores. I was preparing lunch for my family at that moment and had to stop it first to celebrate the great news that had just come to us. I was with my husband then who could not believe that it was really true, and we had to plan on withdrawing all the mount before even planning on what will come first in our list of expenditures.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
The biggest difference in my daily life is the joy of seeing the great farm projects rolling after obtaining a generator and pipes. Even though I am still setting the irrigation system up, I am glad that I will soon be running all-season farming as at the borderline of my piece of land is a permanent river that the whole community had been dependent on even on the dry seasons. I am hopeful that I will soon match the neighboring villages in food production and access to the ready market to earn some income that will in turn be settling other household bills.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
With the dry nature of our region, farming has never been that promising as dry seasons have always cut our hopes of a good harvest short. Even though there had been a government initiative to introduce irrigation farming through the country governments it was so unfortunate that it stopped a kilometer away from our village. For several months now, we had been buying fresh farm produce that we can't produce on our dry pieces of farms. With the first transfer, I saw an opportunity to establish my own by obtaining a generator and pipes that I am currently installing. The cost of the project is so far at KES31000 and now looking forward to soon start the production of short-seasoned crops that are in high demand in the market. I also obtained a solar panel and pieces of lighting equipment worth KES2500 to replace the kerosene lamp that had been producing a lot of fumes unconducive for my 9 children who had been struggling to complete their school assignments every evening under it. I am glad that the lamps are now illuminating a wider space making it easier for everyone to complete any assigned task. With the remaining KES20000, we have a plan to add a heifer to the two indigenous breeds we had been having as we need more milk enough for our family of 11.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
I come from a big family whereby I normally get visitors who come to my place and my house is small that I cannot accommodate them, my children are in school whereby I need to always find a casual work on a daily basis in order to pay school fees and meet other responsibilities of the family e.g buying maize and milk for the family.
What is the happiest part of your day?
I always feel happy in the morning when I wake up healthy and start the day with my usual activities. That is when I am able plan the day and know what and where I will be for the rest of the day.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
I will use ksh.40000 to build my spacious house because currently I leave in a small house with my whole family and this usually interferes with my privacy when I am with my children. I have school fees balance in the school which have really contributed to poor performance to my children this is due to restrictions from the school that everyone has to pay the money and have full school uniform with the books for every class. I am planning to use ksh.40000 to buy a good breed of dairy to assist me have enough milk for the family and able to sell the remaining for school fees and other needs of the family.
