How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
Before the transfers, I did not have any source of income to support my family needs. I have been surviving on a small income from odd jobs in my area such as garbage collection. The jobs to have not been consistent hence I had to rely on friends and family for survival. I had really desired to have a stable source of income so that I could meet my needs. This is why I used my transfers to start a fruit business. The business has been very helpful because I no longer have to seek help nor borrow to meet my needs. The little income I get has helped me buy food, pay fees for my children and handle other basic needs.
Do you have any new or additional goals for your life?
In the next four months, I wish to use the money for savings so that I can take my child for further treatment in India. He has been admitted here in a local hospital but the doctors feel he needs further assessment which can be done in India so am saving the little I get to raise the amount needed to take him to India for further treatment.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spent my transfer on paying for medication for my child was sick and admitted in the hospital. I did not have any money at that time and yet the bill was growing and I wanted to reduce the bill so that when it is time to be discharged, I don't have to much to pay. The transfers have been helpful here though his condition is not improving yet I have managed to get quality treatment because I have been servicing my bills.

How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
Before I started receiving my transfers, I was living in my parent's house. I was not financially stable to rent my own house and even support my daughter well. I had to put up in my mother's house so as to reduce other expenses such as house rent. I was not feeling very comfortable living together with them due to my age and I also needed some privacy. I did not have any option and had to accept my condition. After receiving the transfers and starting a business, I was able to earn an income consistently and as a result, I have my own place. I do not stay with my parents which has really helped me grow in being responsible with my finances.
Do you have any new or additional goals for your life?
I am very pleased with how GD did all its operation. It was a good idea to have everyone receive the same amount of money. This brought a lot of peace in the group because no one felt some were favoured more than the others. I do appreciate GD for this. I really don't see anything GD could have done better.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spent my transfer on paying back a loan I took from a friend which I used on medication for my daughter. She had been diagnosed with kidney failure. I did not have any way I could raise the money hence I had to take a loan to handle the situation. I am glad I did not stay long with the debt because of the transfer. My daughter is now doing well and the pressure I would have had because of the loan is no more. Thanks to GD for the transfer.

How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
Before I started receiving the GD transfers I only relied on casual work which wasn't reliable and at the same time, I wasn't earning well from it making it challenging to meet most of my needs. I was frustrated most of the times, couldn't even afford a smile and I was forced to stay with my mum because I couldn't afford to pay monthly house rent. I'm happy this is not the case anymore because through the GD transfers I opened up a cereal business which has been sustaining me and as we speak I'm currently staying in my own house because I'm able to pay for the house rent.
Do you have any new or additional goals for your life?
Aside from the cereal business, I have seen the potential of a grocery business in this area. My next goal is to start a grocery shop around my shop since there is none in this area at the moment. I am thinking of starting a grocery shop in a months' time using the profits from the cereals business. This will assure me of an improved income thus improved living standards.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I run a cereal shop which was not doing so well because I didn't have enough stock. When I got the recent transfers I decided to add different types of cereals in order to attract more customers. I'm happy I have enough products in the shop and so far I have already started receiving more customers. I am glad that I am able to serve my customers with various goods

Do you have any new goals that you didn't have before receiving the transfer?
My goal now that I have started receiving my transfers is to start a salon business. I will save my monthly transfers and also the income that I will get from my current business where I sell cereals and use the savings to start the business. This will another source of income to meet my family basic needs and pay school fees for my children.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
The biggest difference in my life since I started receiving payments from Give Directly is that I have a regular source of income. In the past I used to do casual jobs such as washing clothes and the money I got was little. I used to struggle to provide the basic needs for my family and at times my children could sleep hungry when I did not get money to buy food. I used my transfers to start a new business where I sell cereals and I get a regular income to buy food for my family and pay school fees for my children. I am now happy since I no longer depend on casual jobs as I get a regular income from the business.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I used my most recent transfers to expand my business. When I received my first transfer, I started a new business where I sell cereals. I have been depending on casual jobs and the money I got was not enough to meet my basic needs. The initial capital when I start the business was small and the income from the business was little. I used my transfers to expand the business so that I can get more income to meet my family basic needs and pay school fees for my children.
Describe the moment when you started receiving transfers. How did you feel?
It was six o'clock in the morning when I woke up, when I checked my phone I saw the Mpesa notification message that I have received my transfers from Give Directly. When I was enrolled to the program I did not believe that I will get the money/. I was very happy and believed that the cash transfers was genuine and not a scam.

What do you plan to do with the cash transfer?
I prioritize like that because I have skills and knowledge on hairdressing so I will prefer to open a fixed place to operate so that I can have stable income. Secondly, I will pay fees for my children so that they can stay and concentrate in school without being sent home and lastly I will improve my living standards by moving to a much better place of my own and not with my mother.
Describe your biggest worry.
My top concern is my family. Since am a widow I stay with my mum and it's hectic because she controls me so much. If I have a chance I will get my own place that I can make my own decisions. Seccondly, is meeting my daily needs because am a single parent and have kids that depends on me so sometimes it's not easy and lastly people look down upon me since my husband died especially leaving me with all the children and I can't provide well for them.
What are your greatest ambitions?
My ambition is to own a big saloon and cosmetic shop because I believe with beauty and women one can't go wrong and I will also have a stable income to sustain myself and my family.
Describe your usual day. How do you spend your time?
In the morning once I wake up I do household chores then prepare my child for school then take tea. If I have a customer for hairdressing I will attend to her then go assist my mum with her business as I wait for another customer then at lunch time cook and eat as I wait for my child to be back from school. Once he's back I wash his uniform then give him tea. After that we now rest or sleep if am sleepy as I wait to prepare for supper.
