How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
My heart is set on starting another business, this time focused on selling clothes. I have carefully planned to launch it in the month of December, envisioning it as an additional source of income that will make a significant difference in my life and my children's lives. The extra earnings from this venture will enable me to take better care of my children, especially when it comes to fulfilling their educational needs, such as paying their school fees. With great determination, I am diligently saving the necessary capital from my current business, ensuring that I am well-prepared for this exciting new chapter in my life.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
The organization trusted me with the freedom to decide how to utilize the funds according to my own wishes. With their support, I was able to invest in my small business, which has since flourished, providing a stable income for my loved ones. Their support has truly made a positive impact, giving me the means to shape my future. I therefore do not see anything that went astray; everything went well.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
Recognizing the importance of my retail and Mpesa shops as our main sources of income, I decided to invest $330 into revamping the business. The infusion of funds allowed me to restock the shops, expand my inventory, and attract more customers. The once-collapsing source of income now flourishes, providing enough profits to meet my family's needs. With my business back on track, I felt a renewed sense of hope for a brighter future. Taking care of my family's well-being was my top priority, and with the remaining amount, I addressed their immediate needs. My daughter had been sleeping on a worn-out mattress, and I used $55 to purchase her a new one, ensuring she could rest comfortably. Additionally, I bought new clothes for myself and my three children, making sure they had proper attire and felt a sense of dignity and pride. As a family of five, these improvements made a world of difference in our lives, instilling hope for a brighter and more secure future. My spouse, who worked as a casual laborer, also felt the positive impact, as it alleviated some financial pressures in our household.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
I got to learn that I had received the sum of money from GiveDirectly at around 3:00 pm that day. This was after I heard my phone ring and upon checking, I was met with a pleasant message confirming that I had indeed received a sum of $550 as earlier promised by GiveDirectly officers. I felt so much happy that I was finally going to be able to boost my shop keeping business and which will in turn improve the living standards of my family once I make more profits from it. I called my husband who was out to look for work that would help us meet the need of our family. He was so elated and could not wait to come home and make plans with me on how to spend the money.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
The biggest difference in my daily life since I received this transfer is the business that has been boosted and is back on its feet once again. I could not raise enough money from a quarrying business that I normally engage in and this saw my business make losses gradually and almost closed down. The quarrying business could provide us with just $1 per day making it hard for me and my family to meet such needs and even improve our business. I now raise enough money to pay school fees and meet other needs of my family as well. I am a mother of two children and meeting most if not all the needs of my children makes me extremely happy.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
We used $400 to improve my shop keeping business by increasing stock. I bought commodities such as sugar, soap, milk, beans and others that would then be sold to customers and make more profits. Before GiveDirectly transfers, this business was performing dismally as I had very little stock which lowered my profits by a great extent. The amount of money that we made then was barely enough to make ends meet. I now make upto $20 on each commodity that I sell am appreciation from barely $5 that I made before the transfers. I also used another $150 to buy my children clothes and food for the family. I am so grateful to GiveDirectly for the support that I got and looking forward to receiving the second transfer and puting it into good use as well.

What do you plan to do with the cash transfer?
The arrival of GiveDirectly in our village was a prayer answered to me. This is because I wished to expand my business but due to the financial crisis, this has never materialized. With this money, I plan to invest $700 to ensure my shop runs well with different commodities. This will earn me the opportunity to have a good time serving the different preferences of my customers. In addition, it will be a chance for me to earn better profits, unlike the current situation which earns me $5 per week. The remaining amount will help me to get a decent mattress to replace the old one, also, I will buy new clothes for my 2 children. Therefore, this is generally what receiving this money means to me.
What is the happiest part of your day?
In August and September, I decided to engage in manganese extraction which is commonly done in our area. Although this job is very energy-draining and time-consuming, I managed to get $100 after 2 months. This money helped me to boost my business which had collapsed for 1 month by then. This has guaranteed me the opportunity to relax from the harsh jobs as I settle at home operating my kiosk. Therefore, I consider this as what has brought me joy.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
I am operating a kiosk at home, a job that I have been doing for 3 years now. Currently, I am experiencing financial challenges because the profit from this work is very low and some of my customers have become unreliable. Imagine giving someone goods on credit and ending up unpaid the bill! It has been a life full of stress because I feel like I do the job as my routine since I don't get my desired profit. I have always hoped to expand this job but it's very hard due to the low capital which has not grown over time. What a life!
