How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
My life is currently different in that I now live in a more decent house which has all the comfort that needed. If the money could not have come, I would have really struggled to meet the goals that I had set for myself.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
I feel GD helped many people by financially supporting them. Had it not for the transfers, I wound not have begun new hairdressig business which is currently family's source of income. There is nothing worth mentioning that GD has done wrong.
What did you spend your second transfer on?
I spent my second transfers largely in improvement of my house which was mud thatched at the time the transfers came in. I have been struggling to do this for couple of years by now but I had no source of income. So when the money came, I kicked out the mud that was attached to it. I bought timber, nails and hired a person who replaced the mud with timber. As at now, my house is looking nice and presentable. I am not ashamed of bringing in visitors as the house is also furnished with chairs, tables and very soon a TV set will be installed.

What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
Over the recent past, life has not been that friendly to us. We lost all the household cattle after a prolonged famine. We really faced tough times as a family. Things turned from worse to worst when I lost my husband last year who was always helping us in meeting the household needs.
What is the happiest part of your day?
The happiest part of my day is in the midday when am with other people. It is at this time that I can interact freely and share stories with them and forget about my problems.
What does receiving this money mean to you?
For a long time I have desired to have a cow for the household. I had several cows but they were affected by a prolonged famine and they all died. After receiving this money I would buy a dairy cow and bring an end to a long time problem in this household.
