Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
I can still recall very well just like yesterday when my phone rang continuously. I then decided to check who had sent the message at such an hour because my curiosity could not keep me calm. Upon reading it, I realized the message was from Give Directly. I was overwhelmed with joy since I was sure I would achieve a lot through it.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
Having the dairy cows in my that I am currently rearing has brought the biggest difference in my daily life. I have always been dreaming of owning them for a long period of time but my income was low and I couldn't afford to purchase them. I settled in buying them simply becasue they have numerous benefits. First, I will be benefiting from the milk they produce. I will be using some for my family consumption and sell the rest in order to earn an income The money will be helping me in paying school fees for my children and meeting their other basic needs with ease.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spent part of my first transfer on buying some livestock such as two dairy cows at a total of KES 40000. This is what I have been aspiring to own for so long but I could not afford it. I also bought some iron sheets, building poles, nails, and timber. This was purposely for the construction of a new house for my son whom we have been living in the same house for all those years. The remaining amount of money I am using it in buying some enough foodstuffs and some other household items that I did not have.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
My greatest desire has been to start a livestock rearing project so that it can help me educate my children but due to lack of financial resources, this dream has never materialized. When I heard of GiveDirectly's cash grant, I got overwhelmed after knowing that, I will be able to fulfill my life ambitions. With my first transfer, my plan is to buy 2 indigenous dairy cows plus 6 goats at a total cost of $480. I will also use my second disbursement to furnish my room with a new bed and a mattress and the remaining amount will help me to pay school fee arrears for my children.
What is the happiest part of your day?
Imagine spending the whole day in the bush doing charcoal burning! It is the most strenuous work that can make a person curse the day. My evening hours do comfort me since I usually spend this time relaxing and enjoying the company of my children. Therefore, the evening is the happiest part of my day.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
Charcoal burning is what I have known in my life since the death of my husband almost 9 years ago. With my much struggle, I have never managed to own even a calf that can help me to sustain my children in school once they advance after their primary level and this worries me a lot. Therefore, the lack of a reliable source of income that can help me to meet my life ambitions is the biggest hardship that I have ever faced.
