How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
Both transfers allowed me to transform my family. I now have a new goal of stocking a mini shop and a small restaurant that I built near my home. Currently, I am focusing more on farming once I sell some of my produce will get capital to stock and start work.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
In my opinion, I appreciate Givedirectly for sending us kind and patient officers to teach us more about the objective of the project. I do not have any negative views about all the processes that we were taken through until we received all our transfers.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
After receiving my second transfer, my priority was to purchase a piece of land my neighbor was selling. With all KES 53,150, I used in acquiring the land. I am grateful that once I plant maize on the farm it will do well and will sell to earn an income hence catering to most of my household stuff.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
It was around 9pm while already asleep when I heard an SMS notification on my phone. On checking, I confirmed to have received KES55000 from GiveDirectly. I was very excited and slept happily knowing my dreams of completing unfinished projects had come true.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
The biggest difference in my daily life since I started receiving the transfers is completion of a shop building project which I had started building April last year but had stalled when I ran out of resources.Through the transfers, I also have adequate food for family which wouldn't be possible to get before and now my kids have grown healthier and happier.I normally rely on goat broking business and casual labor in order to sustain my family.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spent KES27000 on completion of a shop building project which had stalled when I ran out of resources.I also spent KES 3200 on a sack of maize and KES 3000 on clothing, KES8000 on debts settlement, KES7200 on Ironsheets and KES 8000 bed and beddings.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
Receiving this money means completing building a shop and starting a business. I have been constructing it over a long period because of little income. I will start a restaurant and a shop. Spending about KES 20,000 will be enough. I will buy a cow to diversify my income sources and complete paying for the land that I occupy, I will use about KES 50,000.
What is the happiest part of your day?
Building in this shop is the best thing that happened to me over the last 6 months. Even though it is not completed yet, it is a source of hope that I will have a booming business. I will get profits to take care of my children from this kind of income.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
Currently, I work as a broker, earning about KES.5000 per month. This is not enough at all to provide food for my family. I have suffered a lot, especially after my wife left me, to an extent that I almost committed suicide. I only changed my mind when I thought of my children. When she ran away, she left the kids under my care. It is difficult to find food and to pay school fees for them.
