What do you plan to do with the cash transfer?
My first priority is to build a permanent structure for my pig stead in Kosovo Mathare. The current place has no fencing and the pig easily runs away. I am trying out urban farming that's why its important for the steads to be permanent, spacious and clean for my pigs. My second priority is to use the money to expand my wife's business of selling second hand clothes by buying her more stock for the business. I expect an increase in income from this business and so my family can have another livelihood to depend on for an income and our finances will improve. Lastly I will open a new business of selling fresh fruits here in Mathare. Fruits are all seasoned and whenever one fruit is out of season there must be another in season. This makes it easier to sustain the business due to readily available fruits and market. I am guaranteed an income from this business and I will not worry much on working risky jobs like the motorcycle business.
Describe your biggest worry.
My top concern is family because as a casual labourer of collecting garbage and riding a motorcycle I barely have enough income for my family's upkeep. As a former street family, my wife and I work extra hard so that our children do not end up like us, we were both raised in slums and on the streets. We used drugs and had bad morals but my children gave me hope to be a better father and that is why I work for them to have food and other needs. I recently got involved in an accident while riding the motorcycle and got injured badly. I haven't been able to work efficiently and I still have a bruised face with painful joints. At this state I can not work so I now depend on my wife to support the family while am at home for the time being.
What are your greatest ambitions?
My ambition is to be a successful and responsible father to my children, be self employed and be a role model to others. My wife and I were once street families. As a street child I would use drugs especially glue for hallucination and for feeling high. I had no home and one of my children was born on the streets. I struggled to make ends meet and when I moved from Mlango kubwa to Kosovo Mathare I met peers who helped change my life for the better. My life background has been poor, with no one to guide me for good morals but I want to ensure my family's basic needs are met and that I be a good role model to my children.
Describe your usual day. How do you spend your time?
On my usual day I wake up at around 10:00am in the morning because I work till late at night. I take my breakfast then head to work at Eastleigh. I collect and transport garbage from hotels and restaurants mostly owned by Somali people in Eastleigh. So normally I transport the garbage to Mathare dumpings site and I make several round trips until evening when I head home eat supper then prepare for my second job which involves providing transport services to the locals using a motorcycle. Since I do not own a motorcycle I hire one at 300 shillings per night or less depending on how the business goes for the night. I work late up to 1:00am at night then head home take a shower and retire to bed. I barely have free time but whenever I have a free day I sleep and relax.
