Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
The moment I received my transfer, I can vividly recall that it was in the evening when I was winding up the farm work. My children came to the farm jumping up and down in excitement. Upon asking them what the good news was, that was when they told me that I had received money from GiveDirectly. This was the best news that I had received in a long time, It was so refreshing that forgot that I was tired. I was overwhelmed with joy because I knew that I would be able to accomplish my goals on time. We then embarked on planning how we would utilise the money.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
The biggest difference in my daily life is that I have been able to accomplish my dreams in a short period. I was able to easily build an iron sheet house that I never thought that I would have accomplished due to financial constraints. Indeed it is a dream come true. I am grateful for the support that lifted our living standards.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
Upon the receipt of my initial transfer, I opted to use the transfer in building a decent house for my family. This is because I was unable to construct one before due to financial constraints due to school fees responsibilities. I am a farmer and blessed with three children. Therefore, I used all of the KES 35,000 on building a house. I then used the remaining amount of KES 20,000 on buying foodstuffs and farming. I am grateful for the support that lifted my living standard to a better one in society.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
Receiving this money means better housing for me. Currently, I stay in a very old, grass-thatched house that we have been using for more than thirty years. It is now old and it leaks during the rainy season making it very uncomfortable to cook from or for my grandchildren to sleep. I have not been able to build one due to insufficient finances. I am a single parent having lost my husband many years ago and I struggled to raise my children on my own. This will cost me approximately KES 30,000. For the rest of the money, I will renovate the other house, replace the iron sheets, and buy furniture and household items.
What is the happiest part of your day?
My grandson completed his primary school education two months ago and he excelled very well in his studies. He qualified to join secondary and he made me very proud as a parent and as a grandmother. I had staying with him, l and can attest his hard work has paid off.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
The biggest challenge is food insecurity. My piece of the farm after it was shared among us ( polygamous household) and my sons, I remained with half an acre. Being a dry area, crops are mostly affected by low rainfall leading to poor yields. The much we harvest does not last a whole yarr and I am forced to purchase food like maize from the very expensive market.
