How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
I have been living with my children on my parents' land where I can barely start an extra project since it is so squeezed. Initially, I thought I would one day get back to my husband's land to venture into farming but time seems to be running, and have decided to work on buying a small piece of land as my new goal. I have two kids that I already had when I separated from my husband and is currently my responsibility to ensure that I adequately provide for them. The piece of land will be their pride since I hope to later construct them a place where they can finally call home.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
The initiative by GiveDirectly was a bright and not limiting one as it is the reason behind my growing business at the moment. I appreciate every piece of advice I got during enrollment, and even the freedom of spending to meet my needs was a good gesture. I have nothing bad about the whole process and everyone in the village is still praising GiveDirectly for the generous support they gave us.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
After separating from my husband some years ago, I had been struggling a lot to ensure that my two kids get all they would have from both parents. Filling their father's gap has never been easier but I am glad that GiveDirectly's support changed my perspective and made me a little more creative in preparation for a better future. I spent the whole of my second transfer on setting up and running a small business that has undergone some growth phases since its initiation to date. After paying a deposit of KES 3500 and an equal rent for the current shop that I am running my business in, I managed to stock all the items I had enlisted, and even though I have not fully satisfied my customers who sometimes miss some items, I hope to keep restocking it with more that meet their needs. I have been paying school fees out of the proceeds and actively participating in the savings group that I started with my other business friends.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
I am a school teacher so I spend most of my days at school. One morning when I was in class at about 9.30 a.m, I received a message notification that I had received KES 55,000. I felt so happy that I had to take a moment to compose myself.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
Since receiving this cash transfer, I feel that my life has progressed a great deal. I am a single mother who earns just KES 6,000 a month, from my job as a teacher. This money is not enough to cater for food, shelter, clothing and education for my two children and me. This has caused me frustration for many years, especially since I had accumulated a couple of debts as a result. So I was relieved when I received this transfer from GD. Since then, I have paid off the debts. I have also bought a dairy cow that supplies us with enough milk and paid for my children's school fees. Life is so much better.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
As a school teacher, I earn just KES 6,000 a month. This money is not enough to cater for my family's living expenses and as a result, I had sadly accumulated some debts. So I spent KES 15,000 of the transfer to pay off these. I then bought a dairy cow worth KES 22,000 to save on the money I would spend on buying milk. I also bought a goat for KES 5,000 and spent another KES on paying school fees for my son. I hope that he will be able to stay in school and learn, smoothly.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
I am a teacher by profession, certificate holder. I cleared college in 2018 but have not gotten a stable employment. I am employed under Parent Teacher Association which I am paid KES 6000 per month. My pay is not sufficient to meet all my needs. I am a single mother with 2 children.Teachers service commission has ordered us to go back to school for diploma in order to be employed on permanent basis but due to lack of money I have not been able to achieve that. So when I get this money I would like to enrol for diploma in CBC. This will run for one year. To complete it I need KES 90000. On completing this Diploma I am confident that I will be employed under Teacher service commission thus a better future for my family.
What is the happiest part of your day?
The happiest part of my day is in the morning. I am happy that I have seen a new and it motivates me to go to school to teach. It brings joy to me to impart knowledge in the children hoping they will have a better future.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
The biggest hardship has been getting employment, being certificate holder has been a challenge especially with the new school curriculum. Nearly all the schools needed a teacher with Diploma in new curriculum. Financially constraints has also delayed me in furthering my studies thus not achieving my lifetime goals and meeting the needs of my family.
