How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
After the two transfers, our household is now different from how it would have been without the transfers. I have managed to put up new structures, obtained a good livestock breed, reserved the piece of land that I would have sold to pay school fees, and currently feeling relieved from the stressful thoughts I had over the pending bills I had. I am grateful for the current living standard with my family and all credit goes to GiveDirectly for giving us another chance to make a lot of changes again in our household.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
In my opinion, the whole project carried out by GiveDirevtly in our village was work well done. This is one true testimony that can be heard not only from those who were lucky to receive the transfer but also from those who are still expecting to receive it. Most of the developmental changes are clearly depicted in that we managed to invest heavily in livestock, housing, and also school fees which was also the case for my household. This has given me a moment to rest, peace of mind, and at least a break to figure out how best I can work my plans out to ensure that future bills will be met in time. It was only my wish that this project would have been going on a bit longer than the two transfers as I still have some ideas I would have implemented.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
After the accomplishment of the started projects with the first transfer, the second one came with an opportunity to invest in other new schemes I had. I spent 25000KES on purchasing a heifer after losing the only cow we had due to a severe illness that later claimed its life leaving us no option but to start buying milk again. With the heifer, I needed to re-establish livestock farming on our field hoping to see it multiply soon. I also bought a piece of furniture for the just-completed house and paid the remaining amount on school fees for my three children. A huge amount ended in settling school fees since we had been struggling in the last few months to a point of selling part of our farm to sell to raise enough amount for the school fees. After paying this, I felt relieved knowing that the remaining piece will not be sold anymore as the paid amount covered two terms.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
I felt so happy and I thanked God when I received the Mpesa SMS saying that I had received the transfer from GiveDirectly. I informed my husband about it and he was very happy too. I felt like poverty had left my family since I was going to achieve my desires. We started planning immediately on what we are going to do with it. Thank you GiveDirectly, may God bless you so that you can continue helping others.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
This transfer has changed our lives a lot. I have been able to build a sleeping house for my boys and hence they now have a good place to sleep. They no longer be beaten by cold at night as they go to a very far place to sleep. Having bought a cow, I will no longer have to go to look for milk to buy. I will be able to have milk that my family can consume and I will also be able to get some for sale. With the income from the sale, I will be able to use on other things like paying for my children’s school fees. My children will thus no longer be sent away from school. This cow will also keep me busy, I will take care of it and I will no longer have to go to doing casual jobs to earn a living. Thank you GiveDirectly for making this happen, may God bless you abundantly.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
The transfer from GiveDirectly has helped me in various ways. I was able to buy a cow with some of the money, and pay school fees for my child who is currently in school. I also used part of the money to build a house for my young boys who did not have a proper place to sleep. I also bought some clothes for my children and bought some chairs with the remaining money. I have always wanted to have my own cow and build a sleeping house for my boys but due to financial constraints, I have not been able to. The little money that I get, has been mostly going to payment of school fees for my children. My boys used to go to their grandmother’s place to sleep which is far but it reached a point where they did not want to sleep there anymore. This is because there were some disagreements between them and they argued. They demanded that I build a small grass-thatched house for them but I did not have money at the time and the grass for roofing was not available. We have also suffered a lot because we did not have our own cow, we have been buying milk and this costs a lot. I thank GiveDirectly for this transfer, I did not know that I will ever get such a huge sum of money that will enable me to achieve what I have always wanted to do.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
I have been struggling to pay School fees especial my two children who are in Secondary School level. Even though I have 5 who are in Primary School, their fees is not high compared to the ones who are in Secondary School. I pay a total of Ksh 13,000 a year for Secondary School and Ksh 4,000 for Primary School. Owing to the fact that I am a house wife, we solely depend on my husband for upkeep and meet education expenses yet his income is hardly enough to cater for the entire family. My husband is a power saw operator earning a meagre wage of Ksh 200 a day. Therefore, my ambition is to give my children the best education they need using the transfer I will get from Give Directly.
What is the happiest part of your day?
My morning entails working in my 0.6 acre where I have grown maize and kales on a small portion. I use my afternoon looking after my one cow and doing household chores. Reuniting with my husband after the days work is the joy of my life. Therefore, the happiest part of my day is in the evening.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
Prolonged period of drought has been the biggest hardship we have faced in life. This has led to low crop production and subsequently unable to meet School expenses of my children. The land under cultivation is 0.6 acre of land where we have grown maize for home consumption yet we initially depend on it to meet other household expenditures. Out of this, we harvest approximately 4 bags of maize which hardly enough to cater for the entire family. This has forced my husband to venture into casual to supplement from the little we get from the piece of land.
