How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
My top priorities include supporting my five children's education and meeting their basic requirements, like food. They still have a long way to go before finishing at least high school because they are in elementary school. I, therefore, give their education my full attention. I intend to establish a savings strategy through the occasional job I undertake to assist me in achieving my objective.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
In my opinion, GiveDirectly did a fantastic job by offering us financial support and allowing us to spend the funds however we saw fit. We were given the option to decide how the money would assist us, and we are quite proud of what we were able to do with it. In contrast to other organizations that typically target a particular group of people, everyone was pleased with the selection criteria because they were fair.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
When I got the second transfer, building a shelter for my kids was my top priority. My house was too small and crowded to hold my family of seven, so I decided to build one for them. They used to ask friends for shelter for a while, which did not make me feel better, thus explaining why I made the choice I did. I spent $49 on 70 constructing poles, and since I already owned 8 iron sheets, I merely added 10 more for $93. The additional supplies and labor costs from the contractor totaled $155 in total. After that, I spent $128 on a bed and mattress because my previous sleeping arrangements included a little mat and a sisal rope bed, both of which were very unpleasant. I'm content right now because my kids have their own house and do not need to stay with friends anymore. For my five children, who were always in and out of school due to school fees, I managed to pay a $100 tuition fee. They are currently enrolled in school and working on their education, which makes me delighted.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
The moment I received my transfer, I can recall that I had gone for catering work at our church place. Suddenly, My phone rang. Because I had a vision problem, I asked our pastor to read the message to me. That's when she told me I'd received money from GiveDirectly. I was overwhelmed with joy and happiness because I knew my life would be transformed. I am eternally grateful for the wonderful support that has had a positive impact on our lives.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
The biggest difference in my life today is that I am debt free and at the same time my son was able to sit for his national exams without any pending balance. All this would not have been possible if I had not received money from GiveDirectly. I am so grateful for the support that amazingly brought smiles to our lives by uplifting our living standards.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
School fee responsibilities have been a long-standing source of frustration for me. This is due to the fact that I have six children. My husband sells cosmetics, and I run a business. Our meager earnings are insufficient to meet all of our needs. I recall being forced to take out a loan from the women's group at some point. When I received my transfer, I planned to pay my son's $100 school fee arrears. Second, I paid off a $340 debt that had accumulated. This was due to the fact that I was sick and bedridden last year, making it difficult to raise school fees, so I was forced to borrow money. Finally, I purchased school supplies.

What do you plan to do with the cash transfer?
I am so relieved that I will be able to settle all my debts. I have become a talking point and a laughingstock in my village and it can be stressful. I owe about $600 and I want to settle the whole amount to be at peace. Once I have accomplished this I will give my husband $150 for him to start a business that he can capitalize on. It will be my desire if he can start something that can be sustainable for our family
What is the happiest part of your day?
I have a 20-year-old daughter who is sitting for her final examination in primary school. I have accumulated a debt of $500 which I need to clear before she sits for her exams. She was about to be chased from school this month but I am happy I was able to take a loan of $180 from my savings group and took the whole amount to school for them to allow her to continue with her studies.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
I have accumulated so many debts that sometimes I think to myself and wonder how I am surviving. I have five children in school, I owe two different schools $320 and $120. I also belong to a women's group where I also took a loan of $180 to settle some school fees arrears. I am in so much debt that I have become the talk of the village and it is affecting my mental state.
