Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
I was at home, unable to read messages because of my age, so I was waiting for someone to help me check if I had received any transfers from GiveDirectly. My assigned helper was far away, so I had to wait. Then, a GiveDirectly officer visited me and informed me that I had received $200. I was so happy when I heard the news!
The first thought that came to my mind was to use the money to pay school fees for my grandchild. It gave me such relief knowing that I could now support their education. This assistance from GiveDirectly truly lifted a burden off my shoulders.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
The biggest difference since I started receiving cash transfers from GiveDirectly has been in education and bedding. Before these transfers, I was unable to support my grandchild’s education, even though he stays with me during holidays. Now, my heart is filled with happiness knowing that I have been able to contribute to his schooling.
Since replacing the makeshift bedding with a comfortable bed and mattress, my nights have completely changed. I now sleep with dignity, and it has greatly improved my overall well-being. The support from GiveDirectly has truly made a significant impact on my life.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
Upon receiving $200 from GiveDirectly, I decided to use the money exactly as I had planned. I allocated $40 to support my grandchild’s education, as he stays with me during the holidays, and I wanted to contribute to his schooling.
Next, I wanted to improve my comfort, so I spent $60 on a mattress and bed. Previously, I had been sleeping on makeshift bedding, but now I look forward to bedtime because of the comfort that comes with the new setup.
I also used $40 to buy a sheep, which I believe will help me face future challenges as it multiplies. I can sell the sheep later to generate income. Lastly, I spent the remaining money on food, ensuring there is enough at home. Before, I used to skip meals, but now I have enough to eat regularly.

What do you plan to do with the cash transfer?
My heartfelt prayer has been to regain my health and return to work, standing on my own two feet again. The biggest obstacle I have been facing is lack of funds for medical treatment. I intend to use all KES 110,000 available to diagnose and treat my knee problem.
Once healed, if there is any amount left, I plan to use it to support my grandchild's education by paying school fees. Additionally, I hope to invest in purchasing a cow, which will provide a sustainable source of income for me.
What is the happiest part of your day?
I find happiness in the visits of my children, who regularly come to check on me.
During the April holiday, I was especially joyful as I hosted my children and grandchildren at home. Their visit did not just bring their presence, but also food and other essential items, which added to my joy and gratitude.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
I face the challenge of being unable to walk, as I've been struck by a mysterious illness that has paralyzed both of my legs. I've endured this condition for three years now. I have been unable to afford better medical treatment due to financial constraints. This disability has prevented me from working, making it difficult to get money for food. As a result, I rely on the support of relatives and well-wishers to meet my basic needs.
