How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
The dream of starting a business is there, but the biggest hindrance is financing. Our source of income is not reliable, although, I have a plan. But if all goes well, it is my wish that I get to start a business that would enable me to start a retail shop in the village.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
In my opinion, receiving cash from GiveDirectly has been the best thing that happened to us. The enrolment processes were transparent and straightforward and more so, they addressed well all our concerns and were on time. I never experienced anything challenges or things that needed to be improved on.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
The moment I received my initial transfer, I opted to build a decent house for my children. This is because the house that I had was small and I needed a spacious place because the family size was growing. I am married and blessed with four children. I work as a masonry and I knew that the cost of building a house would be slashed because I was an expert in that field. Hence, I used $400 for the construction. Thereafter, I paid back a debt of $50 which had accumulated and lastly, bought foodstuffs with the remaining amount. I am so happy for the support that brought so much happiness in my life by uplifting our living standards.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
I felt so much happy the moment I received money from GiveDirectly. I was all alone in my house and when I heard my phone ring I checked and confirmed that I had been sent money from GiveDirectly. I called my wife who was equally very happy to get the good news.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
The biggest difference in my daily life is the house that I was able to build. I know that my children will have enough space to pursue their studies without interruption.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I used all of my recent transfer to assemble building materials and build a new house. I had had the desire to build a better house especially considering that some of my children were graduating to higher grades. I am a father of four and this house was meant to give them space to study without interruption. I work as a mason and the amount of income would just provide us enough food for the family and nothing to save.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
Receiving this money will have great impact in me. I have a house which is halfway complete. I have been wishing to complete on it's construction but I run short of funds. I still need approximately KES 40000 to complete. My plan is to leave my current living house as my children bedroom and move in to the new one once it is complete. My children are grown ups and I am uncomfortable sharing one roof with them at night. I am thankful for Give Directly's plan of eradicating poverty in my region.
What is the happiest part of your day?
What brought me joy and happiness is the average rains we have experienced from last year November Upto now. Firstly,I harvested one and half bags of maize in the month of February 2022 and this helped me out from buying maize for domestic use. Secondly, the rains became the genesis for plenty animal feeds. I am happy that my dairy cow will soon give birth.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
Currently I am joblessness. I am a masonery and house construction rate within my locality is very low. I go for a period of not less than two weeks to get a construction work. This means providing basic needs such as food and clothing to my family is a big challenge. I am hopeful that people will prioritize building houses when they receive Give Directly's funds and I am sure I will have a lot of construction work.
