How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
My life is different than how it would have been had I not received the transfer. This is because I now have some assets that I can rely on. Before receiving the transfer, buying milk was my daily routine and I used to spend KES 60 daily on its purchase. I am glad that this is no longer the case since I now get milk from my goats and cows. Because of this, I am now able to save some money daily due to a reduction in my daily expenditure.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
In my opinion, GiveDirectly does well by giving financial aid to the lowly people in the society and I do not see anything that they do not do well.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
When I received my transfer, I spent the all amount to buy a dairy cow and two goats. I settled on this since it is an investment that increases over time. I will be supplying milk to the nearest cooler plant and use the income to pay school fees for my children.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
It was around 1pm while cooking lunch when I heard my neighbors singing and dancing for joy and then suddenly came an SMS alert on my phone. On checking it's contents, it was GiveDirectly money we had been eagerly waiting for and I leapt for joy. I even forgot I was cooking because it was after returning from the MoMo agent that I found out that my mom had helped complete cooking of my lunch.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
The biggest difference in my daily life is buying a dairy cow which I had desired for the past two years. The dairy cow will act as an investment for payment of school fees for my kid in the near future. As a hard-working single mom, I had even bought a young bull which I had plan to keep and later sell for an heifer once grown up.I am now relieved of casual labor because the through GiveDirectly transfers I bought adequate food which will sustain me for a longer period. Before, I used to rely on casual jobs like firewood selling and fetching of water in order to put food on my table but not anymore. I am also grateful because GD has enabled me to buy latest clothing fashion which I would envy my neighbors when they dressed decently but I couldn't afford.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spent KES 35,000 on a dairy cow as an investment for payment of school fees in the near future as well as milk source for my family. I have been buying a liter of milk at KES 40 per day which is quite costly and at times unreliable. I also spent KES 2500 on two goats because they grow fast and will be a source of milk. I also spent KES 3600 on a sack of maize in order to sustain us for a longer period because there are long dry spells in our place and we used to eat from hand to mouth initially.I also spent KES 10,000 on latest clothing fashion because before we used to afford only second hand clothes. I also spent KES 3000 on food and household items.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
I was working as a maid before the COVID-19 pandemic but immediately the first case was reported in Kenya my employer lost his job and she decided to let me go. I came back to my house and life has been so hard since then. I have to sell firewood to make money. With GiveDirectly transfers I want to start a hair salon because I am gifted in hairdressing.
What is the happiest part of your day?
I am always an optimistic person and when I wake up in the morning I feel it's the happiest part of my day because I believe everyday is a chance to better my life.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
When I was working as a maid my employer would shout at me and sometimes insult me. This would make me so sad but I had no option. Living and working in that house while working was the biggest hardship of my life.
