What did you spend your third transfer on?
I spent my third transfer on purchasing a sewing machine and establishing a tailoring shop. I had trained as a tailor before marriage but poverty could not allow me purchase a machine for my work. I had to sit on my skills which would otherwise earned me a lot would I have put them into practice. I instead ventured into some casual jobs like home cleaning, water fetching, land tilling and many more that earned me very meager wages which hardly satisfied my family's needs. I felt so wasted for that long simply because I could not afford to buy a sewing machine for my work and none was willing to employ me too for the same.
How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
My life has greatly improved with the transfers received since I currently generate my own income without necessarily pleading for people to offer me casual jobs.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
In my opinion, GiveDirectly has done much better in ensuring that whatever little it sends to recipients, has helped them a lot in poverty alleviation. This has been ensured through its continuous follow up calls and visits. One thing I would recommend is the idea of rewarding those people who are found to have spent their transfers well.
