Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
Happiness was immeasurable when I received the first transfer, I was really glad that the opportunity to demolish the old hut and putting up a stronger one had come. My wife also felt so good on receiving the news as we were home together that morning, and it felt so good that the first thing that came out of her mouth after that confirmation was the proclamation of the hope to move out of the old house and put up new and spacious one.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
The biggest difference in my daily life is the comfort of living in a new house without a worry about the sleepless nights in the rainy seasons. It is currently warmer as the roof is well set with new iron sheets and the walls are well plastered devoid of crevices that could otherwise be letting in some cold. I am grateful to GiveDirectly and still hopeful to do much with the second transfer that I am are currently looking forward to.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
On receiving the first transfer, I spent the first KES45000 on the construction of a new house bearing two rooms. We had been living in a small old structure for a long time, and as a young family of two, I saw it good to construct a new one since the family will soon be growing to a bigger one. I needed a semi-permanent one that will still take us for the next 10 years as I will not be planning to put up another one any sooner. With the remaining KES9000, I obtained new bedding and also foodstuff for the household.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
Receiving this money means a big boost towards satisfying my basic needs. My priority is shelter. I will use 300 USD to build a two roomed house with an iron sheet roof. My current house is tiny and grass thatched. My spouse and I endure a lot especially during the rainy season because the roof leaks. This is always a risk even to our health.
What is the happiest part of your day?
Working as a charcoal vendor is very tiresome. I am usually very tired in the evening. I take this time to relax and chat with my wife. This moment is very fulfilling for me. It is the happiest part of my day.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
It's 8 years now since I tied the knot. I have never been successful to get a child since my wife has reproductive complications. This has really affected our marriage to the extent that her parents want her back home. This has led to psychological toture for me because I have always admired to have children. To add insult to injury the community including my relatives have always looked down upon me for not siring children. My spouse has also gone through hate from other family members.
