How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
Yes. I had new goals that I didn't have before receiving this second transfer which was buying livestock. This is because I believe they are a worthy investment and when they multiply, I'll be able to sell one or two and raise some money for my personal and family's immediate needs.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
I am so grateful because GiveDirectly did well in everything in as far as this program is concerned. I was personally able to get livestock, a better house and a bed with a mattress where I sleep comfortably. I don't see any particular thing that GiveDirectly doesn't do well, in my opinion, GiveDirectly met our expectations and answered our prayers. We are so grateful.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spent most of the transfer which was KES 18000 on buying six goats because I believe they are a worthy investment in that when they multiply and increase in numbers, I'll be able to sell one or two and address the financial challenges I will be facing in the future. Also, I chose these goats over cows because they are able to survive in this dry climate of our area compared to cows. In terms of water, goats generally persevere with less water compared to cows, therefore, I believe that I will be in a position to keep my livestock around for long and seasons to come. I am so grateful to GiveDirectly.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
I received the message of my transfer at around 9 am when I was in the forest preparing charcoal for sale. I thought it was the normal message from Safaricom which I usually received every morning. At around 11 am, my helper came and checked my phone. He informed me that I had received my transfer. I was extremely happy together with my husband for receiving our transfer that would change our lives for the better.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
Owning some livestock is the biggest difference in my daily life. I have desired to start livestock rearing as an alternative source of livelihood for my family. I am currently happy for achieving my dream after purchasing 4 goats with my transfer. This will ensure that I have a sustainable source of income for the family.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spent my transfer to construct a decent house for my family. I spent KES 35,500 to purchase 200 building poles, 30 iron sheets this was for the construction of a 3-roomed house for my family. Previously, I was living in a small house which was not enough to fully accommodate us. I also bought 4 goats at KES 3500, this is a long-term investment and I will be able to sell them at a profit once they reproduce to cater for any emergency that might arise. In addition, I use KES 3000 to acquire sufficient food for the family. Lastly, I saved the remaining amount to assist me in payments of the labor charges in the house construction.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
Receiving this I will get money to buy food for my family- will spend 20,000 shillings to buy maize bags and beans to keep in my house . I will expand my house to have four bedrooms because this is a two bedroom house ; it will cost me 30, 000 shillings and also will send 20,000 shilling for my husband' medical expenses because he is hospitalized with urinary problems. We have a hospital bill of 27,000 shillings of which I will clear the bill and have some emergency cash for his medical bills.
What is the happiest part of your day?
My happiest part of the day is in the evening when my children have taken supper and are going to bed without hunger- this is the time I am happy
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
My biggest hardship is having a sick husband hospitalized with a urinary problem, hunger and food in insecurity of which we do not have food to cook in the house.
