How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
The goals I had were ones that I'd been having all along, which were repairing and improving the state and condition of my house because it was in a very poor condition, with worn-out materials which seemed like it was going to collapse anytime. This posed a safety risk to my family and myself, which would be prevented by improving and renovating it. The other goal was to get a second cow that would partner with the one I bought with the first transfer, and I'll be using them in ploughing both for my own land and for others at a fee, which would be enough to enable me meet my family's immediate needs.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
The program raised the living standards of so many of us in our village. Most of us got livestock, others constructed better houses while others started businesses. This unconditional cash transfer is very good because it enables one to meet their personal needs and address the challenges they're facing because we all don't have the same kind of challenges. In my opinion, GiveDirectly met my expectations and I saw nothing that was not done well or anything that was wrong.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spent most of the transfer which was KES 30000 on renovating and improving my house because it had been in a very poor state and condition, with old and worn out building materials which used to pose safety risks since it seemed like it could collapse anytime. This used to be the case because the only source of income I depended on was my wine tapping and selling business whose hardly enough income used to be shared among my family's immediate needs as well as my children's school fees. Therefore, I couldn't afford to have my house repaired or renovated. However, with the coming of GiveDirectly, good help came to me and I am grateful that my house is in a very good condition now and my family has a better place to sleep and there will be no safety risks for a long time. I also spent KES 13000 on buying an additional cow to partner with the one that I had bought with the first transfer in ploughing because it is more effective with two cows than one. I will be using these cows to plough my own land as well as for others at a fee which will raise me some income to help me to meet my family's immediate needs. This income will also complement the produce that I will get from my farm. I am so grateful for I now have something that will keep me and my family going for long, all thanks to GiveDirectly.

I felt extremely happy after receiving my transfer. I had to call my neighbor to confirm the Mpesa message on my phone since I did not believe it. I remember very well It was at around 9 o'clock when I was in the field herding our cows when I received the transfer. I had to left the cows in the field and went home to inform the rest of my family members about the good news. We together celebrated and thanked GiveDirectly for fulfilling their promise.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
The biggest difference in my daily life is that now living a happy life after fulfilling my wish of owning a pair of oxen. This will boost my farming by ensuring that I have enough harvest from my farm hence sufficient food for the family because I will be able to cultivate a larger section of my firm. I am optimistic that my children will no longer sleep hungry. In addition, I am planning to hire them for my neighbors at a fee to earn a living. Previously, I was preparing my farm using my hands which was time-consuming and tiresome. Similarly, the produce was very low because I was only able to cultivate one acre of land.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I am a farmer growing maize mainly for my household consumption. Usually, I using the traditional methods of cultivation using my hands which is time-consuming and characterized by low harvested hence insufficient food for the family. My wish has been to improve it so that I produce enough harvest. I spent KES 26,000 to purchase a pair of oxen to assist me in the preparation of the farm. . Previously, I had to hire from my neighbors for KES 2000 per acre which was relatively expensive. In addition, I used KES 10,000 to invest in my mother's a charcoal vendor by purchasing more stock since it was unstable. Furthermore, I spend KES 6000 to repair my motorbike which was a fault and I lacked enough money to repair it. My plan is it will assist me in fetching water for the family. Previously, my spouse had to walk for a long distance to get water, or sometimes I had to hire someone to assist her. Also, I purchased a new mattress for KES 6000, the one I had earlier was old and worn out which was not comfortable to sleep on. I was always feeling backache something that makes my life miserable. The remaining amount helps me to clearing the fee arrears of my children.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
I believe in education as an investment. I have always tried my best to educate my children but school fees has been a big challenge. Receiving this money will help me invest more in education. My first born is in secondary school while my second born will be joining secondary school next month. I will use 300 USD to ensure that they continue with their studies. I will then use the remaining 250 USD to repair my house. I will plaster the walls to replace the mud walls then replace the iron sheets since they leak during the rainy season.
What is the happiest part of your day?
I depend on harvesting and selling palm wine. I start my day by checking on my plam trees, getting what is ready for sale and tapping more for the subsequent days. I later take time to graze the few goats I have. Climbing the tall palm trees is a risky excercise. Evening comes as a sigh of relief to me. I am usually glad when I end the day well and safe. I spend my time relaxing with my family after a busy day. This makes it the happiest part of my day.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
Financial constraints is what has been the biggest hardship in my life. I get 3-4 USD a day for harvesting palm wine. This is my main source of income. This is not enough to cater for all the basic needs and education for my 7 children. This has made me struggle a lot financially.
