How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
The biggest difference in my life because of the transfers is that I have a business now. Ever since I have always wanted to have a business because income from casual work and odd jobs in my area have not been paying very well. I felt the one way to help myself financially and be stable is to start a business. I tried several ways of getting a capital like saving and taking loans but I was never successful. This is why I used my transfers to start the business which has been doing very well and helping me out. I no longer borrow as I used to before the transfers.
Do you have any new or additional goals for your life?
My new goal is to boost my two businesses so that I can make them stable. When I achieve the goal of making them stable, I know I will have a reliable source of income to help me sustain and meet my needs well and that fo my family even in the future. I would want to make my life better than how it was before the transfers.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spent my transfer on starting a small cloth and popcorn business here in my area. I have always wanted to have a business but I was not able to start one before the transfers. I also started a cereal business for my mother who does not have any source of income. She has always been reliant on me yet I do not have much to even sustain my own needs. This is why io chose to start a business for both of us so that we can be financially independent.

How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
My life is now different in that I am now able to meet my basic needs. In the past I was not employed and I used to do casual jobs to get an income to meet my basic needs such as food. At times I could go the whole day without food when I did not have money to buy food. Currently I am happy since I used my transfers to start a new business where I sell second hand clothes and I am able to meet my personal needs using the income I get from the business. Thank you Give Directly since I have a source of income and I no longer struggle to get food.
Do you have any new or additional goals for your life?
My goal that I did not have before receiving the transfers is to buy a plot and build a house. I am planning to save the income from my business and used it in buying the plot and later build a house. Owning a house will enable me save the money that I would have used to pay rent and use to cater for other needs for my siblings and parents.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I used my most recent transfer to expand my business. I decided on this because when I received my first transfer, I started a new business where I sell second hand clothes. I expanded this business since the initial capital was small and I have been earning little income from the business. I restocked my business with a variety of clothes and I will therefore get more customers hence more income. I will therefore be able to meet my personal needs and pay school fees for my siblings without any problem. I also used part of transfers to pay school fees for my sister who was joining secondary school. This was because I received my transfers at time when she was suppose to go to school and my parents was not able to raise all the school fees required. I also used my transfers to buy food which will last for two months. I will thus be able to save the money I would have otherwise used to buy food and use to meet other basic needs for my siblings.

My new goal is to open up second-hand clothes and shoe business. It will expand my daily income. After stabilizing my businesses I am planning to marry and have a stable family since I can now provide for my family without any difficulty.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
There are no jobs in Kenya today and through GiveDirectly I have gotten financial assistance to start a business. I am self-employed and I do earn a daily income hence I can support my younger siblings with a lot of ease . This is the greatest difference in my daily life. I also have a lot of peace because I can see a bright future ahead .I am no longer an idler and a hustler.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spent my transfer on paying house rent Kes 6000 , I bought foodstuffs worth Kes 4000 for my family members because I received the money when we did not have anything to eat. In fact the previous day we slept without eating. I also bought popcorn machine for business.
Describe the moment when you started receiving transfers. How did you feel?
The moment I received my transfer I was very happy, it was around 5 am. Immediately I saw the message I woke up instantly and went to a friend who is my next neighbour to ask him whether he has received the message from GD. I was surprised he was also awake and wanted to come to my house to ask me whether I had received the money. We were so excited and thanked God together because it was a miracle to both of us.

What do you plan to do with the cash transfer?
First of all, I will buy a house where I stay in the slum because I have slept several times out in the cold due to lack of rent and felt bad when my door was locked by the landlord. Then I will start selling sweets, ice cream and popcorns in my neighborhood because there are five schools situated in one place and this will provide ready market for my business. Finally, I will open an art center for children to train and nature their talents to help bring best out of them.
Describe your biggest worry.
My top concern is unemployment because I will not be able to have food on my table and also pay rent. If I am unable to have money for sustaining myself I fear I might engage in criminal activities or result to begging.
What are your greatest ambitions?
My ambition is to become a great businessman. This will help sustain my life where by I will have my own home and will never lack food. Then I will be able to give back to society because there are many people who are needy and need our attention.
Describe your usual day. How do you spend your time?
I normally wake up in the morning and go to work. When I return back in the evening, I take bath then I walk out to spend time with my friends talking about how the day was. After meeting my friends I go back to my house watch news then I sleep. During weekends, I play football with my team mates. When I am not in the field I stay at home and listen to music.
