How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
My new goal is to have additional livestock in my compound. Having received the first and the second transfer and having bought one dairy cow I now have a desire of buying an additional one. Livestock is oke of the economic activity that we rely in and getting more of them will see me get empowered the more.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
GiveDirectly did well by giving us the freedom to choose what to do with the money. This freedom empowered everyone to spend the the money in a good way.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I used KES 20000 to make nhif contribution for the next 3 years and bought a cow worth Kes 10000 and bought food with the remainder. I have been falling sick in the recent past and this prompted me to make contribution on my nhif cover for for the next three years

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
Felt so happy felt the moment I received money from GiveDirectly. I had been among a few people in my village who had their transfers delayed. I was so anxious that month and eagerly waited for the money. When I heard my phone ring, I called my helper to check if it was a message from GiveDirectly and true to my word, they had indeed sent me the money. I remembered a verse in Psalms 50:10 which says that God owns the cattle on a thousand hills and I was reminded that indeed God had sold some of His cattle to help me out. The joy in me was immense
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
The biggest difference is the house that I have built.for the longest time I have stayed in a Grass thatched house and always wanted to build a better house. I feel happy that I now live comfortably in an iron roofed house just like any other person in the village. My self esteem and desire to continue living has been boosted a great deal. With the iron sheets as the roof of my house I will be able to start collecting clean rain water and bring to and end the long and tiring journeys to and from the rivers.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I used approximately KES 40000 to build a whole new house. For a long time I had the desire of building a better house of my own having been left behind by my children who were now grown ups to start their own families. I lived in a very small grass thatched house and my desire had always to build a bigger house that was iron roofed. With this money I was able to make my dream a reality and I now have a bigger and better iron roofed house with a cemented floor. I used another KES 10000 to seek medical attention having had one of my legs paralyzed for over a year. At least I was able to pay for X ray and waiting upon the Lord for the results and healing in the end. The remaining amount of approximately KES 5000 was used to cater for transport, buying food and clothes for myself. I feel so much indebted to GiveDirectly for the support they gave me.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
As you can see I am old and I no longer have the strength to smear the floor of my house with soil and cowdung ,my desire is to cement the floor of my house. The roof is also in a dilapidated condition and it needs to be painted. At my old age I need a descent and comfortable house since I spend most of my time at home. I also want to furnish my house with chairs ,the one with cushions. It will cost me approximately KES 60000 to do all that . As for the rest of the money my plan is to use it to seek medication, my legs are aching and I cannot carry heavy weight.
What is the happiest part of your day?
Most of the time I stay in my home . I do not engage myself with active work because of my old age except tending to my chickens here at home. My happiest part is in the evening. I enjoy listening to a local radio station called Taach ,there is a favorite program that I follow in the evening and that explains why I am so happy that time.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
The biggest challenge has been to do with my poor health. I hardly walk ,my legs and waist pains me alot. This has left me to do light works only. Even fetching water from the dam to carry in my back is a big deal. That is what has been giving me problems for sometime now.
