Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
The moment I received the transfer I felt so happy. I remember it was around 9am. I was feeling unwell. My son had the phone. He came in the morning and inform that' GiveDirectly has sent the money. I felt so happy because I have never received such amount of money before. My family members felt so happy because because of this support. I knew I would be able to buy a dairy cow.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
The biggest difference in my daily life is that I have purchased a heifer. Buying milk daily is so costly. I depend on small scale farming and the produce is so small and it's only for consumption. I did not had some extra cash to buy a dairy cow. This was so demoralizing and stressful especially when I had some visitors. I had no milk to make them tea. When I received the transfer I felt so happy and they first priority was to buy a heifer. I will get enough milk for the family when it reproduce in the next few months. I will sell the extra milk to earn an income to meet other household items. I no longer stress up like before. Were it not GiveDirectly all this could not have happened, I am so grateful for the support because GiveDirectly has changed our living standards.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spent KES 30,000 to buy a heifer. This will enable me to get enough milk when it reproduce in the next few months and cut the daily cost of buying milk which is so costly. I paid for my medication. I was feeling unwell that time when I received the transfer. The rest of the money I bought food and clothes. I am so happy because GiveDirectly has changed my living standard.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
Receiving this money means my desire of owning a dairy cow will be fulfilled. Due to my age I have used nearly all my resources I had to meet my family needs. I used to do small bussiness of maize trade and egg trade but my age can allow me anymore. This dairy cow will not only give milk for consumption but I will sell the extra at least to get income like other people. Since I can do any casual jobs I will save the rest of the amount for any emergency that can occur.
What is the happiest part of your day?
As old as I am now I like looking after my dairy cow after I finished my household chores in the morning. Since this the only source of income I have, it makes me happy seeing it grassing well and healthy and thats is my happiest part of the day.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
Lack of food is the biggest hardship I have faced. Due to my old age I can not do any do sort work to earn a living. Mostly I depend on my children to provide for me who also have to meet their families needs. Usually we forgo lunch so we eat the little we get in the evening.
