How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
My life is currently different because I no longer depend on daily income from casual work in rich neighbors coffee farm. I bought a motorbike which has enabled my husband to venture into bodaboda business which is now earning the family income. My daughter who was almost dropping out of school had her fees settled. Had it not for this transfer, my daughter would have ended up dropping out of school and getting into early marriage as it is the common practice among the poor families in my community. I am now happy since I believe she will finish her studies and become a dependent member of my family. Building a new house gave us a lot of comfort and peace of mind. We no longer live with our children in the same room because our children now have their own room a factor that has created a lot of happiness in our family.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
The recipient feels that Givedirectly did well by giving cash so that they choose own projects to improve their lives taking care of diversity of needs. She doesn't see anything that we did wrong.
What did you spend your second transfer on?
I spent the second transfer in buying building materials which were used in building a new house. I was living in a small house which did not accommodate me with guests, for instance, church gatherings or group meetings are sometimes conducted in my home, the meeting would always get scuttled whenever it rained since space is not enough. Additionally, the new house now has additional room for my children and store to keep my farm produce during harvests. The transfer came at a time that my child was sent back home for school fees, she risked dropping out of school and I was able to pay her school fees. I used the remaining balance of the transfer in buying food for the family because I had no maize in the store and I was now depending on buying maize flour daily after engaging in manual casual work in the tea plantation of our rich neighbors.

Describe the biggest difference in your daily life.
Can you imagine the stress of waking up in the morning and having to look for casual work in people's fields so that your children can get something to eat?So the biggest difference in my daily life and that of my family is that the too much hustle to look for food is not there. The motorcycle taxi business my husband is doing is bringing at least some daily income.
Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
The moment I received the from GiveDirectly,I felt so happy and some relief too. I immediately knew my problems were going to be a thing of the past.
What did you spend your first transfer on?
I spent my transfer on buying a motorcycle. We wanted something long term that could have bring at least some daily income in our family. My husband no longer works in people's farms to make ends meet. We have something to rely on.

What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
The biggest hardship I am facing is inability to fend for my family of seven members. I always have to engage in hard labour in order to provide basic needs for my school going children.
What is the happiest part of your day?
The happiest part of my day is late in the evening when we sit and share meals together, especially when my children share their academic dreams with us.
What does receiving this money mean to you?
Receiving this money means that I shall be able to raise more cash that I shall use to construct a semi permanent house at home. This will relieve me from the burden of renting a house.
