How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
My life is better now, I am sleeping in an iron roofed house which I constructed with the transfers and on a comfortable bed. I am no longer in the stress of looking for thatch yearly for renovating the hut.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
GiveDirectly does well to follow us up after getting the transfers. This has encouraged people in my community to use the money well because they know that GiveDirectly will come back to see how the money was spent. There is nothing wrong with the way they work.
What did you spend your second transfer on?
I used my second transfer for buying 2 bags of cement, 2 beds, a mattress, 2 cows, food and paying the builders.

Describe the biggest difference in your daily life.
My life will soon change in the next few months when I complete to build my permanent house. Currently, I'm still sleeping in thatched house which leaks when it rains. I never had hopes of building a permanent house in my life. Thanks to GiveDirectly for the cash transfers.
Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
I felt very happy because I had never held such an amount of money in my entire life.
What did you spend your first transfer on?
I bought building materials (bricks 3 trips and timber) worth UGX 880,000, labour worth UGX 45,000, bought food ( cassava flour ) worth UGX 80,000, transport worth UGX 2000, bought clothing/ household goods ( bed sheets) worth UGX 25,000. The recipient also bought other things like soap, Vaseline but could not remember the amount. There is a balance of UGX 600,000 which I'm planning to spend purchasing building materials.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
Receiving this money means I will be able to build an iron roofed house. Maintaining a grass thatched house has become so expensive the fact that grass is so scarce these days. In case of any balance, I will buy a cow so that I can have milk.
What is the happiest part of your day?
I am happiest in the noon time when I am seated with my mother. We plan how to take care I the family.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
The biggest hardship that I am faced with is inadequacy of farm land. The small piece of land that I have is the one I use repeatedly every season. I am not able to cultivate as I would wish to because of the limitations of space. The yields of this land are also poor because it is being used all the time. It does not have time to rest.
