In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
I like the idea of conducting a follow-up after Indirectly has sent the transfers. It is a show of concern from GiveDirectly and it has encouraged most people to wisely spend their transfers. In as much we are allowed to make spending decisions but through the follow-up surveys, most people get motivated to spend their transfers well. Besides, it is also a way to identify those who might have lost their transfers and advise accordingly to prevent further loss of more transfers.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I used KES 2000 on my late brothers' funeral expenses. He had been sick for a while and unfortunately, he passed on three weeks ago. KES 1000 I gave to my secondary school daughter for her transport back to school. I am thankful for the support since it came when I needed it most. I spent a lot on the burial preparation of my late brother which left me down financially.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
It was early in the morning and I was just at home with my brother's family trying to encourage them that all shall be well. At that moment, I did not have any money although my brother's condition was deteriorating. Surprisingly, I heard a notification of the Mpesa message on my phone. What a moment of relief? I could not hold my joy because within my heart, I was just praying God to help me get money in order to take my brother to the hospital. I was glad that courtesy of GiveDirectly transfer, I was able offer support to someone in dire need.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
Generally, I do not have anything tangible I can count on that I did with my transfer. However, what makes me happy is that I was willing to sacrifice all my transfer in order to offer to support my brother who was seriously sick at the time transfers were sent. I am glad that I was part of the family members that took him to the hospital although he succumbed to his ailment. Unfortunately, his family had been struggling financially thus it was unable to give the needed support then since his spouse is just but a house wife.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
Having a responsibility to take care of a blood brother who had been ailing from a liver condition for a couple of months, I had to always spend more money hence I was financially down. I therefore had no option but to rather strive to look for every opportunity to raise some little money in order to support his wife in buying for him some drugs. When I received my transfer, I never held it back but rather made a generous contribution together with other family members so that we could take him to the hospital for proper medication. Despite the fact that the family succeeded in taking him to the hospital, he unfortunately succumbed to the condition.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
Education is the only change catalyst in our society. I would love to give my five children a good education. I am planning to use my transfers to support their thirst for learning.
What is the happiest part of your day?
The presence of Givedirectly has sparked hope of I being able to give my children a good education. I feel it has come in handy and it will cushion me from my financial crisis. I can now see some light at the end of the tunnel and I am pretty sure that my family will get the education they deserve.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
Financial insecurity has become a predicament in our family. With no constant source of income, I am struggling with the education of my four children. My firstborn daughter is in form one when I am required to play 60,000 KES annual. What scares me the most is the other two daughters who are going to sit for their primary exam come March this year. I am not certain that I will be able to meet the inflated school fees then.
