How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
My life has transformed in a way because I have been able to pay school fees for my son without struggling like I used to do. Apart from that, I would say that I am now able to pump water for my neighbors and be the main supplier at the village. I am planning to use the water to carry out agricultural activities and probably be able to make some money from being a large scale farmer.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
In my opinion, I believe that the organization helps people to transform their lives and even get out of their poverty situation. For me, I bought a new generator which I currently use to pump water from the borehole which I drilled just within my compound. The main reason for having this borehole is to be able to get enough water for my family's consumption as well as using it for agricultural purposes. Apart from that, I will be selling the water to my neighbors at an affordable price because most of them have to walk long distances in search of the rare commodity.
What did you spend your second transfer on?
I spent the money on buying a water pumping generator plus the entire piping system. My child was also able to go to school after I had paid all the school fees in good time thereby allowing him to have an easy time going to school without any major interference due to school fees arrears. Apart from that, I decided to buy a few pieces of iron sheets which I intend to use to build a new house in the near future because the house I currently live in is too small and is in such a dilapidated state.

Describe the biggest difference in your daily life.
Through the GiveDirectly transfer, I was able to purchase a power generator so as to help me in pumping enough water for watering my plants. I was previously using buckets and my bicycle to carry water which was tiresome and time-consuming. With the generator, watering will be easy and time-saving. To me, this is the biggest difference I have experienced so far in my life.
Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
I received the transfer notification from GiveDirectly around 6 o'clock in the morning as I was attending to my irrigation project which I water my plants daily. On checking to confirm the sender, I could not hold my happiness for the message informed me that I had received the first transfer that I had anxiously been waiting for. This money gave me hope that I would soon boost my project by purchasing a power generator to pump water instead of using buckets.
What did you spend your first transfer on?
I have been carrying out an irrigation project since last year in which I plant different kinds of vegetables and fruits which I normally sell to our nearest market and to my neighbours. However, this has been tiresome to me for I was using my bicycle to fetch water and buckets for watering my plants. Due to this challenge, I spent part of my transfer to purchase a power generator to help me in pumping a lot of water to my plants and saving time and energy. My project is now thriving very well and I am expecting to earn good money from my daily sales. The roof of my house was old and not stable enough to withstand strong winds and worse still it leaking thus I bought enough iron sheets and nails so as to renovate it. I am Happy that I will be sheltering comfortable once I finish with the renovation.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
Receiving this money is a great boost to my current farm work. I have been depending on rainfall which in most cases is unreliable and has led to dismal crop production. Now that am going to receive GD transfers, I will be able to construct a mini water pan and purchase a water pump for easy irrigation. Again am looking into modern drought resistant crops that are viable in this region. All that set, food insecurity and poverty will be something of the past.
What is the happiest part of your day?
The happiest part of my day is in the evening, I enjoy spending time with my friends after a long day in the farm. Unlike the rest of the day where am overwhelmed by activities here and there, I feel much at ease when am home in the evening and that makes me happy.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
Family conflict that led to separation with my wife was one of the biggest hardship I've faced in life. I went into depression and alcoholism for a long period of time. I lost my job and the little resources I had back then disappeared. The thought of spending the rest of my life without her shattered me. It is by the grace of God and help from my family that am a better man now. At the moment, am in good health, and able to engage in economical activities.
