How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
I'm going to purchase some land as my next step. Building a home is the purpose of purchasing the property. I am currently living with my parents after divorcing my husband. Based on that, my eight children won't feel cherished or at home at their grands' homestead while I'm gone because I left my marriage with them. So, if I get some money, I'll buy a plot that will be a resource for them and a home that they will be eligible to inherit.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
GiveDirectly, in my view, is a company that changes people's lives. It arrived to help us escape our current state of destitution and move us to a level where we can also recognize ourselves as human beings. As opposed to forcing individuals to do things they don't want to do, cash transfers let people select what they want to do. This is why I am a major supporter.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
It has been difficult for me to pay the school expenses for my eight kids. After receiving the transfer, I spent $105 to resolve the bothersome school fee issue. The hardest thing was having to pull my kids out of school due to tuition. The kids are now doing well in their academics and are extremely delighted that they are back in school. Since their happiness is also my happiness, this provides me comfort. Because their shirts and blouses were ripped, I also used $35 to purchase some school outfits for them. Additionally, I spent $78 on some maize flour bales, of which I have now purchased four. I choose to utilize $150 to launch a boutique business in addition to the occasional tailoring work I do for a living after divorcing my spouse. Thereafter, I decided to save the balance for the family's maintenance.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
What an evening it was to a divorced mother of eight children! It was around 4 pm when I was almost closing my tailoring business to leave for home to hook up with my children in time before it was too late I received a message on my phone. I immediately checked before closing. In my astonishment, my eyes reflected on a huge figure of $550. There and then, my senses came back and remembered that GiveDirectly had promised us the same. Due to happiness, I did not read to the end of the message since I knew it was from GiveDirectly. I left for home full of strength forgetting the day's stress that I had gone through.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
The tangible vivid difference that was brought about by the transfer is that the struggle I used to go through has been minimized. Initially, I could hardly save anything because I had to pay the owner of the sewing machine I was using as well as provide for my family. Currently, I am happy that GiveDirectly empowered me to get my sewing machine and I no longer hire. The proceeds I get from the day's work go either to savings or family use unlike before when I had to pay the owner of the sewing machine.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
When I withdrew the first transfer, I saw it wise to buy a sewing machine since I am a tailor by profession. Initially, I used to do tailoring using a hired sewing machine something that was very expensive on my end having in mind that tailoring does not generate enough income. Therefore, I used $125 to buy a new sewing machine and started a tailoring business. I am very grateful because I now own a business that aids me to provide for my family. I also used $116 to pay school fees arrears for my primary school children who were ever sent home for fees. Currently, they are retained in school after clearing the fee balance. Thank you to GiveDirectly. Thereafter, I used $105 to renovate my house. Using the remaining amount, I bought some food and clothes for my children since it was the festive season of Christmas.

What do you plan to do with the cash transfer?
My job! Expanding my business is the strongest desire that I have ever had since I heard about the arrival of GiveDirectly in our area. With this money, I intend to spend $200 to buy a brand-new sewing machine that will enable me to perform my work more comfortably. Having a new machine will guarantee me a high chance to get better profits since the current one is not in a good condition. Part of my first transfer will offset all my children's fee arrears. The other transfer $550 will help me to construct a house that will accommodate me with my children because the one we currently use belongs to my brother. Owning a house will give me a sense of belonging and hence, it will earn me back the dignity as a respected person in the village. Therefore, this is generally what receiving this money means to me.
What is the happiest part of your day?
Eight children have a big burden when no one is there to support them and It can even be worse when you are neglected by your people. To me, it was all a sigh of relief when I was welcomed back home by my mother after separating from my husband. What a parental love! This is what gave me the peace that has enabled me to establish my tailoring work again. I am now a happy person at home with my children despite the financial challenges. Hence, I consider this as what has brought me joy.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
It is slightly past 1 year now since I separated from my husband and this left me with the burden of taking care of my 8 children. Considering that my tailoring job has not been stable since I came back to my maternal home, I have faced a lot of challenges including the provision of my family's basic needs. What a life of worries as a mother! My children's education is what has been affected most since they have frequently been sent home due to the lack of fees. At home, we have been forfeiting meals, a situation that has affected our health status. Therefore, I consider financial instability as my biggest challenge.
