How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
I have a piece of land that I bought a few years ago and I have not been using it. My new goal is to wait for the rainy season to plant maize and vegetable, sell them and save money, build a shop and open a retail business so that I can increase my source of income.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
Money does not pass through other government officials which have always been a trend in Kenya also Educates us on the right channel to follow whenever we get an imposter.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I am a farmer, I produce maize, cassava, and leafy vegetable and sell them at the market but during this drought season, I changed my hustle to producing charcoal and selling a sack at $ 3.5. This money is not enough to take care of my family and most days I take food on debt at a nearby shop so that my family can have a meal on the table. I have eleven children, eight in school and three out of school, and paying fees for all of them has been a challenge. My son in high school had school fees arrears of $240 and he could not sit for his final exams. It broke my heart that I sometimes cried at night. This money has helped me clear my son's school fees. He is currently sitting for his exams, bought enough food for my family as we wait for the rainy season, and bought two goats for milk.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
I was just relaxing at home when I heard a message notification from my phone. It was around 5 pm, When I checked it out I could not believe my eyes it was a message confirming that I have received money from GiveDirectly. I felt so happy because I have never received such an amount of money before, I immediately informed my spouse and we all celebrated with joy. It was one of the happiest evenings we have ever had. We knew we would be able to purchase building materials and remove our house. I went and withdraw the money the following day.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
Being in a position to purchase the building materials to renovate my house is the biggest difference in my daily life. We lived in a house with a dusty floor. We are being exposed to dust-related particles which might cause some respiratory-related diseases. It's not easy to maintain these houses. I have always wanted to cement the floor but I did not have the money. I depend on small-scale farming and casual jobs in the village. The amount of money that I would get through this is so small and I was not in a position to buy the materials. Currently, I have purchased all the necessary materials, and I mas still waiting for the workers to start the construction process. I am so happy because I will have a decent floor and I will not be worried like now. GiveDirectly has fulfilled my dream of owning a decent house.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I purchase a wheelbarrow at the cost of KES 5,000. This is to ease the farm work that I always do. I paid KES 15,000 for school fees for my son who is in school. He was so happy and he is doing well without being disturbed. I spent KES 24,000 on purchasing building materials to cement the floor I am still waiting to start the renovation when I get the workers. The remaining amount of money I spent on food and household items that were lacking. I am so grateful since GiveDirecly has changed our living standard to be much better than before.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
Proper housing is one of the basic human needs. I will use my transfers to reinforce my house with pillars and floor it. This will cost me around 35000 KES. I will use the remaining amount to sustain my family on food. I rely on subsistence farming for my family's survival. With the ongoing drought, making a living has become difficult.
What is the happiest part of your day?
Drought has been ravaging the whole of last year. My livestock was dying and I incurred losses. I was on verge of selling the remaining cows to avert further losses when it miraculously rained. I was happy because my cows regained good health and I even canceled the thoughts of selling them.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
I am a subsistence farmer. I rely heavily on crops to make a living. It has been three seasons now without rain. I resorted to doing manual labor ( cutting tree logs for sale). These kind of work brings low returns and they are intermittent. I am sometimes forced to seek help from my son when the situation is tough.
