How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
My new goal now is to focus on the dairy-keeping project. I wish to make this my main source of income through selling milk. I will be getting some income to meet my daily household needs. Secondly, I will do farming, This will enable me to get enough food for the family.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
Giving money to the people in the community to build better houses, invest in dairy-keeping projects, and build better and decent houses are what GiveDirectly does well. The training and the registration process were also perfectly done without discrimination. I do not find anything that GiveDirectly did not do well.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spent KES 25,000 on purchasing an Ox. My plan now is to keep it and sell it in the future at a higher price. I will use the money to buy a dairy cow. I will get enough milk and cut the cost of buying milk which is so costly. I spent KES 4,000 on paying school fees for my children in various schools. Currently, they are studying well and being disturbed like before. I paid a debt of KES 1,000 that I had borrowed from a friend to pay school fees. This has given me peace of mind since I was worried to get the money to pay the debt. I spent KES 5,000 on buying one sack of maize to feed my family. I am so happy because my family had enough to feed on. The rest of the money I spend on other basic household items.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
I was at a funeral within the village when I received a message that confirmed the receipt of the first transfer. Everybody around me at that moment received the same message, which brightened their faces amidst the sorrowful moment that we had. Later in the evening, I got home and informed my husband who was equally appreciative and planned to collect from the shopping center the following day.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
The biggest difference in my daily life is the complete change in my household's living standards. At the moment, we are enjoying enough supply of milk from our dairy cow that even though it is not producing a lot, we are happy that the little we are getting is just enough for our daily use. The expenses I had been incurring in buying milk are now reduced and I find ease in making savings towards payment of school fees for my children.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spent the first KES 30000 on purchasing a lactating dairy cow which brought the huge spending on buying milk to a stop. I am grateful that we now have enough milk to use in the household with my family of five. I also cleared KES 3500 tuition fees arrears for my daughter who is currently in grade 9. I also paid a debt that I had with the neighbor worth KES 2000 that I had obtained a month ago when my daughter needed some examination fees, bought a sack of maize worth KES 4500, cleared tuition fees for the two primary school kids, clothes for every member of my household at a total cost of KES 11700 and, spent the remaining amount on obtaining utensils and other household goods. I am grateful that I had been able to do a lot with the amount that I received.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
Receiving this money will enable me to clear school fees for my daughter who has been at home for two weeks. Seeing her at home while her classmates are in school worries me because I am not able to pay school fees and at the same time provide food since I do casual jobs around my home and the money that I earn is not sustainable. Clearing the arrears will be a relief to me and will allow me to plan better on how I pay her school fees.
What is the happiest part of your day?
Having no better source of job is a challenge but for the last months, I have had jobs that enabled me to feed my family. Seeing my family happy and healthy has brought me happiness.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
The lack of a better source of income is my major challenge because the casual jobs that I do around my home allow me to buy sugar and maize flour only. I am unable to save any money or vend pay school free for my children comfortably.
