How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
Initially we were sleeping on the floor, taking meaIs wasn't a guarantee and repeating same clothes over and over again was a norm in my family due to poverty. But as at now, we are sleeping on a nice bed with some good bedding, we have some clothes to change and we are able to afford daily meals. I am so happy because Give Directly has changed my living standard.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
Give Directly has at a bigger percentage reduced poverty level in our area. Initially people were living in small houses which were congested and were in bad state but since the organization came, our area is wonderful. Every household has a good and adorable house. Again if possible for the organization to change its terms and offer us another transfer then it will be doing much better.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
Being a widow is not something to be proud of; my life has been in sixes and sevens due to poverty. When I received my 2nd transfer from Give Directly, I purchased roofing materials that is iron sheets and nails. These materials were to complete the roofing of a house I started constructing using the 1st transfer. I placed the house as a priority because I was living in a hat, and my desire was to have a house one day. Then I took KES 11000.00 to pay part of my daughter-in-law’s dowry since my son had hadn’t paid for her yet it is a requirement in our culture. Having slept on the floor for a while, I saw it prudent to but a bed and some bedding. The rest of the money I used on food and clothes. I am so happy because Give Directly has changed my living standard.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
It was around d 8 AM when I was from the dam then o heard my phone ringing continuously. Because I had carried a jerrican on my back, I decided to ignore the notifications and rushed home. While at home, I asked my helper to confirm the notification, he realized that it was the long-awaited Mpesa message from Segovia. I had finally received my first transfer as promised. I was extremely happy for I knew would finally sleep in a decent shelter.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
For all those years, I have been relying on some odd jobs with a meager income, and getting the daily bread was sometimes unachievable. Therefore I was even worried if I will ever achieve the dream of owning a nice house. My previous house was in very poor condition with an old damaged roof and it was almost collapsing. Every rainy season I considered them as the worst moments in life because I had nowhere to shelter on especially at night. Therefore I used to be rained on till when it stops and the cold nights could really affect my health. I give thanks to GiveDirecty because they have restored my lost hope and joy and I am now living happily in my new spacious house like the rest. Also, this makes the biggest difference in my daily life.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I have been yearning to sleep in a decent house for a long time and after receiving my first transfer, I bought some building materials such as iron sheets, buildings poles, nails, and threads This was for the construction of a new house because the previous one was a very small hut which was almost collapsing. I also gave the mason KES 5000 as the labor charge. Later on, I bought a new bed and mattress at KES 10000, and I a now sleeping comfortably without any pains. With the remaining amount of money, I bought enough foodstuffs for my family that would at least sustain us for a couple of days.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
Receiving this money means a transformed life for me in terms of living a better life. This is because as of now, I live in a one-roomed house that at the same time is used as a kitchen as well as a chicken coop. Most of the time, the room is infested with lice from the chicken and this does not give me peaceful nights. To prevent this, I plan to spend the first transfer on constructing an extra room for $400 to shift from the old one and also to purchase new beddings for $100. On the other hand, I will spend the remaining amount to purchase 2 indigenous dairy cows and 1 bull for $300 and $200 respectively. These will be of help to me since I will be able to get milk for both domestic use and also to sell.
What is the happiest part of your day?
Being a rainy season, I spend the better part of my morning and afternoon hours doing farm work. This job is very tiresome and I always feel exhausted. It is only in the evening when I get ample time to relax more and this becomes the happiest part of my day.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
The lack of a reliable source of income is the biggest hardship that I have ever faced in my life. I once worked as a food vendor but due to my health condition, I was forced to leave it and this has rendered me jobless. Currently, I depend on my son who is doing some casual jobs that earn him very little to support both his family and me. I am now a happy person after knowing that, soon I will be able to sell milk from my cows to have a source of income.
