How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
My plan is to venture into selling clothes and fish, two markets that hold immense potential in my community. As a jobless individual, this business endeavor represents not only an opportunity for financial stability but also a chance to pursue my passion for entrepreneurship. I am grateful that my spouse has pledged to offer the much-needed capital for this venture in the next year. With determination and hard work, I am confident that I can make this business thrive, providing not only for my family's needs but also contributing to the economic growth of the community. I am eager to embrace the challenges that lie ahead and build a brighter future for us all.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
GiveDirectly has done exceptionally well in transforming my life. With their unconditional money transfer,I now have a safe and comfortable house, something I had only imagined before. With the funds they provided, I was able to secure a stable roof over my head, shielding my family from harsh weather and providing a sense of security I never thought possible. Additionally, GiveDirectly's support has allowed me to prioritize my children's education by paying their school fees consistently. No longer do they have to face interruptions in their learning journey due to financial constraints.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
For far too long, I had endured the stress of overcrowding in a small grass-thatched house with only one room. It felt like an impossible dream to construct a larger and more comfortable home due to financial constraints. However, thanks to the cash transfer, I could finally afford the materials needed for construction. I am delighted to share that I successfully built a spacious two-bedroom house, offering my family the privacy and dignity they deserved. No more mocking or feeling ashamed of our living conditions; now we had a place to call our own, a sanctuary filled with love and security. Another critical use of the cash transfer was to ensure my children's education didn't suffer any longer. With $200, I paid off the accumulated school fees for my five kids in primary school and one in secondary school. They had been staying home for almost a month, and I had begun to lose hope in their education. My spouse's income as a casual laborer, earning only $5 per day, wasn't enough to cover the expenses. But with the financial support from GiveDirectly, my children could now return to school with their heads held high, knowing they had a chance to pursue their dreams. The remaining cash allowed us to buy food for all nine family members, providing nourishment and comfort during this transformative time. I couldn't be more grateful for the positive impact of this unconditional cash transfer on our lives.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
I had taken my phone for charging at the time the transfer was sent. I heard some neighbours saying that they had received the transfer. I called my son, who later checked and confirmed that I had also received the transfer. I felt happy, and I began to plan for it. This was a new beginning for me, a new hope to hold on to that my life would finally be transformed through the transfers.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
I am grateful to GiveDirectly's program because it was through their support that my son underwent a successful eye surgery that nearly made him blind. I could see him struggling to even read and concentrate on his classwork. He was born with a growth in his eye that was hard to treat. He was referred for surgery many years ago, but it never happened because of some financial constraints. He was able to undergo the surgery after I got the first transfer, and he has now healed and is going on with his studies like other students. I am at peace as his parent because he is now fit and able to study, which makes the biggest difference in my daily life.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
My son had been ailing since birth from a growth in his eye that had made him nearly blind. He was to go for eye surgery to remove the growth, but because of insufficient finances, we could not afford to raise the required amount, and he had to endure the pain even while in school. He could not concentrate on his studies like other students because of this condition. When I received my first transfer, I couldn't wait to have him undergo eye surgery, which cost Ksh. 30000. He was finally treated successfully after many years of trying. As a parent, I am at peace seeing him going on with his studies and no longer in pain. Apart from this, I also spent Ksh. 12000 on paying fee arrears for my five children currently in school. I am happy that their studies won't be interrupted because of fees. I spent the remaining amount on buying daily foodstuffs and other household items that I lacked in my house.

What do you plan to do with the cash transfer?
I believe in education being the future light of my children and I have always wished to ensure their studies are not affected. This has not been the case because of the financial crisis we experience in our household and most cases, they are sent home due to lack of fees. The worst case is when my son had to drop out of school because of $100 arrears. With this money, I intend to spend $550 to support my children's education. This will help them to have ample time in school to produce better results that will keep them competitive in the job market. With the remaining amount, I will spend $200 to seek proper medication for my daughter who has a growth on her left eye. The pending amount $350 will help me to construct a one-roomed iron-roofed house because the current one is small and grass-thatched. Therefore, this is generally what receiving this money means to me.
What is the happiest part of your day?
Despite the financial challenges that I am currently facing in my life, I am so grateful for my husband's efforts in taking care of the family. In the last 6 months, he has been dependable because every week, he sends me $15 that I use to cater to our needs. Although this money is not enough, we are glad to have at least a meal every day. This has given us hope in life and we are always positive in life. Thus, I consider this as what has brought me joy.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
20 years ago, our area had huge forests and people lived in harmony since we used to receive plenty of rainfall but this is not the case at the moment. Due to deforestation, the area is now desert and we no longer depend on farming because of prolonged droughts. We are currently depending on charcoal work which is also not reliable because we are forced to dig out tree remains to make the charcoal. This has made life so difficult and meeting our basic has always been a task for us. This has affected my children's education since my first son had to drop out of school when he was in form three. What a life! In addition, we are living a very miserable life which does not give me peace of mind. Thus, these are the challenges that I am currently facing in my life.
