How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
For the past three years, I have been mending worn-out clothing in the neighborhood with a tailoring machine and occasionally going to the village's schools and nearby retail malls to find more clothes to repair for a fee. Despite my efforts to make a living from this talent, I have encountered numerous difficulties since I have been working from home. My new goal is to find a location in the nearby shopping center where I can buy a piece of new fabric to make new school uniforms. I don't have any ready capital at the moment, but I am hopeful that the small funds I have been earning from doing similar casual work will soon be enough to fund the new venture.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
GiveDirectly allowed us an opportunity to decide how best we can change our expectations for everyday comforts in our families through the free cash transfer we received. Dissimilar to different associations, GiveDirectly's help was genuine and the enrollment process was fair to the point that nobody needed to pay anything to the staff to be selected. I believe this is the best program ever that fulfilled our expectations after spending on the plans we had.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
With the second transfer, I spent $250 on a bullock that I am currently fattening with the intention of selling it later, alongside the other two that I purchased with the first transfer. My grazing areas are right next to a government forest with lush grass that is open for our livestock to graze on. In light of this, I thought it would be wise to get bullocks that can be sold later on when we buy some acreage and will be able to graze freely and grow quickly. In addition, I spent an additional $95 for food that my family of five still consumes. We relied on the surrounding markets to provide us with food but had not been actively engaged in subsistence farming. I am glad that after getting the initial transfer; we were able to resume farming and are anticipating a higher yield before the year is up. Later, I paid $60 for each of the four sheep with the intention of eventually selling them together with their offspring to pay for a plot of land. Since this is the easiest project to handle once I have purchased the livestock, I am optimistic that the livestock project will enable me to realize my desire to purchase a piece of land.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
I was at home alone when I received a message from Givedirectly confirming a receipt of my first transfer. I immediately called my husband to inform him of the same and he was equally excited. We later planned on withdrawing the transfer the following day ready to initiate our plans.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
The biggest difference in my daily is the acquisition of the two bulls which I now have the responsibility to take care of them to grow and hence will sell later and purchase a piece of land that I have always dreamt to own.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
With the many plans that we had, on top of my priority list was to purchase two bulls for KES 30,000. I have a plan of selling the two bulls once they grow and hence will be able to buy land where I will be able to do farming activities. This will allow us to sell the farm produce so that we can cater to schools for our growing children. I also spent KES 2,000 in paying for a piece of land I had rented from my neighborhood where I do plant some foodstuff. With KES 6,000 I paid out I debt I had requested from a friend. I was happy since I will not be fear to meet him since the debt was long overdue. The remaining amount, I spent on buying maize and other household foodstuffs. I am so grateful for the boost that I have so far received from Givedirectly and looking forward to doing more with my second transfer.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
My business was too small to earn enough money to sustain our family. I had a plan to expand my and move to the nearest center Chebunyo. We are happy that Give Directly money will enable us expand my business and buying another cow to supply my family with enough milk.
What is the happiest part of your day?
We bought a two sheep's in November last. That was a success since we never had something to sustain our family in future. We are planning to upgrade to more cows.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
We don't have enough maize harvest to sustain the family for a year with food supply. Harsh weather conditions have lowered the maize production in our area. This is a challenge because maize prices have gone UpTo KES 4000per 90 kgs from KES 2000. We use 270 kgs a year as a family which is very expressive.
