How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
I live on two and a half acres of land which is not enough for livestock keeping. This is because currently, I engage in dairy cows and goat keeping. Therefore, there is a need for an additional piece of land which I have to buy by investing my husband's monthly remittances in merry-go-round groups. This will ensure available of adequate livestock feeds especially during the long dry spells prevalent in our area.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
In my opinion, GiveDirectly does everything well. For instance, in our village, apart from complete households, households with total orphans were also enrolled.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
Before GiveDirectly, I used to own a dairy cow which was the main source of livelihood for my family. As a mother of three, life was quite a struggle fending for my family. This is because my husband worked as a casual laborer and our place is also marked by the long dry spell which has greatly affected farming hence lack of food.
But when GiveDirectly came, I spent KES 28,000 on a heifer which is almost due. This will not only act as an additional income source but also a source of milk to feed my family.
In addition, I spent KES18000 on three goats which will act as an alternative milk source whenever my cows are on a dry spell.
I spent the rest on two bags of maize to ensure the availability of adequate food.
For all this, I am grateful because GiveDirectly has made my life easier. This is because I was able to buy things I couldn't afford within a blink of an eye.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
I had gone to the river to fetch water when I met some of our neighbors happily chatting and one of them inquired if I had also received the promised money like them. On hearing this, I rushed back home as I did not have my phone with me and on checking my message inbox, I was surprised that the money had already been sent. I became so happy and thanked God for bringing GiveDirectly to my village and specifically using them to transform our lives.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
The biggest difference in my daily life is that I am now a proud owner of three goats and not one as I used to before. These are assets to me that I can depend on in case of any financial constraints as one can easily sell them. In addition, I will be selling the offspring when they reproduce and use the money in paying school fees for my children and this will enable them to concentrate on their studies as they will rarely be sent back home.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I had just completed building a bigger house for my family when GiveDirectly came for enrollment and upon receiving my transfer, I decided to spend KES 20000 to equip it with some of the things we did not have. I used this amount to buy three sets of seats and a table and also spent KES 15000 on beddings majorly a bed, mattress, some blankets, and clothes for my family. As a way of investing this money on something that I can continue benefitting from, I spent KES 10000 to purchase two goats and used the remaining KES 10000 on food. I am glad that I was able to achieve all this within a short time.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
Receiving this money will mean a lot. We purchased 1½ acres of land near our home and did not manage to complete the transaction because we have children in school and we had to pay fees for them. I will use KES 80,000 to clear that balance. I will use the remaining to purchase iron roofs, nail and other construction materials so that I can build a house that I purposed to.
What is the happiest part of your day?
The happiest part of my day is in the morning. I start the day positively because when I wake up gloomy, the day won't end well. I therefore purpose to be happy every morning.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
I have lived in this area for a long time and one of the most challenging thing is food security. Our area does not receive enough rainfall therefore making crops not productive. This in turn had affected our income because we earn nothing from the produce that we get.
