How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
My life is different than it would have been if I never received the transfer in that I am living a better life. Through the transfer, I was able to accomplish my dream of starting irrigation farming. At the moment, I am growing maize for my family use by after buying a piece of land close the Galana river. In addition, I was able to boost my goat rearing by purchasing 4 more goats. Also, my children are learning without any interruption due to school fee arrears. Furthermore, we are wearing decent clothing something that has raised our living standards.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
In my opinion, GiveDirectly did well for assisting us with the cash instead of properties like food. This allows us to decide how best to use the transfer. Through the transfer, I was able to solve the mystery of food insecurity in my household. I don't see anything that it does not do well.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
My desire has been to start irrigation farming so that I may have enough food supplies for my family. Initially, I use to struggle doing casual job in order to provide food for the family. Many instances, my kids were going to bed without food or having a single meal on a lucky day something that brought a lot of frustration in life. After receiving my transfer, I spent KES 20000 to purchase one acre piece of land close to the Galana river, where I am currently practicing irrigation farming growing maize for the family consumption. Currently, I can harvest 12 sacks of maize from the farm which is enough to feed my family of 6 for 5 months. Previously, I was a charcoal vendor a job that earns me KES 100 per day which was hardly sufficient. In addition, I obtained 4 goats at KES 4000 each, this is my future investment for the family. I will be able to sale them to educate my 5 children once they reproduce or help us whenever we face any financial challenges. I also spend 6000 to clear the full year school fees for the 4 children. The remaining amount assist me in purchasing clothes for every member of my family since we had very few clothes to change.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
I was so excited when I realized that Give Directly had sent me the money that I had been promised during the enrolment. I was sure that the dreams I had would finally be achieved with the aid of the transfer.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
The biggest difference in my daily life is that I managed to buy a piece of land. The previous one was very small and unproductive and most of the time I have been leasing those of my friends which was so expensive. Sometimes I could not affrd it and in that particular season the harvests were poor. I am now positive that I will be able to get enough yields and my family will no longer as before.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spent part of my transfer on buying some iron sheets, timber, and nails, This was for the completion of a house which I had initially constructed. Later I bought some goats and am now proud since I have some living assets that I can lean on. In addition, I am planning to buy a piece of land since the one that I am currently owning is unproductive. Lastly, I bought sufficient foodstuffs and some decent clothes for my children.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
Receiving this money will help me add more livestock to the little I have. I will buy one dairy cow and 5 goats. The cow will cost me 200 USD while the goats will cost me around 150 USD. Livestock farming has recently proved to be better than crop farming in terms of income generation.
What is the happiest part of your day?
My happiest moment is during the day between 11 am to 2 pm. It is at this time that I am usually relaxed after coming from the farm. Farm work is very tiresome given that I use a lot of energy under the scorching sun.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
This region is very unproductive because of poor soil and lack of rains. This has brought about my biggest hardship which is lack of food. Year in year out I have been forced to buy food since what I get from my farm is barely enough to feed my children. With two acres of land I get less than 10 sacks of maize in two seasons.
