How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
My life is different than it would have been if I never received the transfers in that I have started business which was not possible before . I used to do casual jobs in the village. This casual jobs could earn me a small income and I was not able to meet all the basic needs of the family. I could struggle so much and spent most of my time away from home, I had no time for my family unlike nowadays where I have enough time at home with my family. Currently I have started a business of buying cows from farmers and sell at the market. This earns me profits to meet my daily household expenditure and save some amount in merry go round group that we have started in our village. I have bought better clothes for my family members. I no longer buy milk because I have a dairy cow. My children no longer go without milk like before. I am so happy because my living standard has improved. Thanks to GiveDirectly.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
GiveDirectly does well by giving us money to meet daily needs and improve our standard of living. I do fine anything that GiveDirectly did not do well.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spend the money I received from GiveDirectly to start a business of buying cows from the farmers and sell them at the market this earns me a profits, the rest of money I used it to buy food for the family and clothes.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
I was at home alone and I wanted to take my lunch when my brother-in-law came in and told me that the transfers had been sent. I had not checked my phone and hence I had no idea what was going on. I looked for it where I had kept it and to my surprise, there was the SMS saying that I had received the lump sum transfer of 55000/= from GiveDirectly. I was filled with so much happiness on seeing this that I did not take my lunch anymore. I then prepared myself and I went to withdraw the fortune.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
This transfer has brought a big difference in my life and that of my family. I have been able to buy the cow that I have always wanted to have. I will hence no longer have to buy milk. My children will hence have milk for their consumption and they will no longer have to suffer. The he-goat that I bought will be of great help to me because the she-goats that I have will now be able to reproduce and multiply in number very fast. My business too will be able to grow after I invested some money in it. This way, I will be able to earn more income that can help me with other important things. Thank you GiveDirectly for helping me in this way.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
This transfer from GiveDirectly has helped me a lot. I bought a cow and a he-goat and with the remaining amount of money, I invested it in my business of buying and selling goats. I decided to use the money to buy a cow and a he-goat because these are the things that I needed the most. I did not have a cow before and I have been buying milk for quite a long time now. My children have hence been lacking milk for their consumption. I have a few goats that I am rearing and the little milk that I have been getting from them has only been enough to prepare tea. I also bought a he-goat because I don’t have one, I only have she-goats. Although I have always desired to have a cow and the he-goat, I was not in a position to buy them due to financial constraints. I depend on this business of buying and selling goats as my main source of income. The money that I have been getting from it has mostly been going to the purchase of food for my family.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
I means I will increase my investment in my livestock business currently I buy and sell goats in the local market. I do this three days in a week, each market day I buy two goats at shillings 3000 each and sell it at shillings 4000 per goat. This gives me a little profit to pay fees for my children in secondary school who are living with their uncle. But if I get this money from Give Directly I will be able to expand my business and increase the profit I make and save some for other developments
What is the happiest part of your day?
My happiest part of the day is in the evening when I am done with my work for the day, I get so busy during the day with work in my small farm and the livestock business but in the evening I get time to rest .
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
The hardest thing I have faced in my life is separating with my family when I was not able to make any living to sustain them here and so my wife and children left.It has been 5yrs since then but she visits me sometimes.
